"The Brainwashing of My Dad." Must-see new documentary.

The truth behind the right-wing media machine that changed a father — and the nation.

"I was inspired to make this film after watching my father – a non-political Democrat – turn into a right-wing fanatic after a change in his car commute exposed him to reactionary shows on talk radio. The changes in his behavior drove me to research the changes in the media over the last 30 years – and the effect of those changes on the country was indisputable. As the media have been co-opted more and more by special interests, documentarians have become the new journalists. My hope is that after seeing my film, people will question what the media tells them, and will insist on laws that would hold them accountable."

Like - if I were kidnapped by pirates and treated in a certain way, I would probably start to happily justify piracy and have all kinds of good reasons for making my enemies walk the plank.

Or: more realistically - I support Israel's right to exist and I see things from the perspective of a Jew who knows what we've gone through at the hands of Christians and Muslims and how tenuous our existence is and how eagerly you other folks line up to kill us.

But if I were born a Palestinian in Gaza? Hell yeah I'd think it was noble to die to killing those fucking enemy Jews who had visited so much misery on me.

I would probably be a Republican if my circumstances were different. Or I'd be a happy Duggar wife. Or I'd be selling percocet outside the local high school and telling myself it was cool; I was just making a living, no harm done.

My best friend of years ago turned from feminist to fundamentalist Muslim and is now unrecognizable as the person I used to know.

My lifelong best friend: her marriage changed her. Her poverty changed her. Rich and single, she'd be a whole diff girl.

I don't know who the hell people are, really: mostly products of our surroundings and subject to alteration at any moment.

So, doesn't that mean we are all innocent no matter our awful beliefs - because, think about it: any of us could behave and think completely differently, if we were just kidnapped by pirates or (worse!) Rush Limbaugh?

Sorry. Posting under the influence! It's barely noon. Bad form. But still. My point stands.
