The leak was discovered on Saturday and forced a key section of the controversial pipeline to be shut down. TransCanada (TRP) initially told regulators the spill totaled about 187 gallons of oil.
TransCanada told CNNMoney that while the company has "made progress" in trying to find the source of the leak, it has "yet to pinpoint the source."
Despite that, TransCanada said the spill has been "controlled" because the pipeline was shut down immediately after it was reported and valves and pump stations were shut down remotely. The company said visual inspections confirmed the valves were closed.

(39,215 posts)I hope the tribe takes them (the Canadian Company) on. Tribal cases are usually very slow in getting to a settlement but all the better. The company will have to pay a lawyer for the next 15 years.
I worked with the tribes to try and stop the coal mining in Montana and got no where. This makes me so angry. Always they target native lands.

(34,661 posts)are more proactive than the Crow or Paiute Bands. The Santee Band wanted to be the Marijuana growers and distributors in Sodak last summer. They were building Grow Houses and a Processing plant at their Casino in Flandreu South Dakota, heard it has since been shuttered. I know there are Band Members who have large beef and Cash crop operations in and around the Parkton area.

(39,215 posts)get MJ legalized is how hard they are trying to prevent independent growers from growing. My guess is that when it is legalized it will be corporate growers.

(34,661 posts)One of the Casino owners formed a Corporation to not only Market but will control the Growing and processing operations for all of Nevada. Notice how the DOJ told the Bankers that it is now okay to deal with Marijuana cash receipts.
As far as the Flandreu Santee Band, hopefully after this DOJ thing they can get back on track with their operations.

(21,600 posts)McConnell has had the ear of the MSM for years every time he wants to tout that the pipeline is safe and Obama has no reason to block it! So why is DU the first place I hear about it?
But, sarcastic indignation aside, I though the keystone was blocked???? Why is it in South Dakota??? I know Canada installed piping but I didn't know it ever made it here.

(82,849 posts)Keystone XL still hasn't been approved for its entire length, though many segments are operating in the United States. This is another pipeline owned and operated by Trans Canada.
Ordinarily, I'd say this episode doesn't bode well for final approval of the Keystone XL pipeline, but I'm remarkably ignorant of just what criteria go into the political calculations of such decisions.

(1,150 posts)Transcanada has built a bunch of active pipelines running through the US during the past 6-7 years. Keystone XL would have been fairly straight run from Hardisty in Alberta to Steele City in Nebraska. It also would have been used to move North Dakota Bakken oil fields crude instead of how it's currently transported, mostly by rail.
Blocking the XL portion, in reality, didn't amount to much of a win. As the folks in Hutchinson County are learning...

(15,480 posts)At least the ones that eventually did get reported. And most of those were noticed by property owners, not by the pipe operators who were supposedly monitoring for changes in pressure which would indicate a leak.

(8,732 posts)It is possible the Keystone pipeline has other small leaks that have not been identified yet at the site of other bad welds, Vokes said. It is impossible to know where they are until someone notices them, and by that time the damage could be catastrophic.

(10,493 posts)I'm just at a loss for words some times.
I really thought the GWB years would be our worst. But I struggle to see any improvement in these and many other key areas of public information, investigative journalism, transparency. Even media fact checkers have failed us, only giving narrow definitions of facts or stories to portray their truth ranges.
I don't even want to get in to how much further right we've slipped on other matters as far as policy. I'll be here all night.

Since the 'press' is given special status in the constitution, Maybe we can sue "media" for failing their constitutional duty?
