OK trooper tells local news: Best way not to get raped by cops is to ‘follow the law’

Oklahoma Highway Patrol official reportedly told women that the best way not to get raped by an officer was to “follow the law.”

In recent months, an Oklahoma Highway Patrol officer and an Oklahoma City Police officer have been accused of repeatedly raping women, often during traffic stops.

After a Tulsa County sheriff’s deputy was arrested last week for sexually assaulting a woman while responding to a 911 call, Tulsa NBC News affiliate KJRH decided to ask the Oklahoma Highway Patrol how to stay safe during a traffic stop.

The department noted that troopers should always be in uniform, and that women were allowed to keep their car door locked, and to speak with officers through a cracked window. A trooper should rarely ask a person to come back to the patrol car, OHP advised.

Here’s the problem: the quote “then follow the law in the first place so you don’t get pulled over” comes from the newscaster at the end of the video, not the Highway Patrol captain. This quote pulls two parts of the entire news story together completely out of context. Captain George Brown’s appearance on the video tells people about what they should expect when dealing with law enforcement when pulled over and offers safety tips. However, the deputy who was arrested for assaulting women was responding to a call at a residence, not making a traffic stop. The “then follow the law in the first place so you don’t get pulled over” quote is also not only not uttered on the video by the officer, but it’s at the end of the video when the anchor is talking about traffic stops, and not directly in regards to the story about the accused deputy.

Enough idiots are spewing trash talk about one another that we don't need to falsely accuse the captain, who is trying to educate the public.

Maybe it's just me, because I don't watch much news. But when I do there's a creepy, smug, Hunger-Gamesish authoritarian vibe with "news readers" in the US that makes me believe an American reporter would make such an asinine statement to appear more robotic and loyal to authority - even if authority is running around raping people.

US "News" is a goddamned joke.

I did not watch or read the links, but I do thank you for presenting the facts as you saw and heard them. It appears the captain has been falsely maligned here, and that's not fair.

If the rapist followed the law, that would prevent rape. Sadly that isn't what the idiot meant.

Of course that would work better in a state that doesn't have a law that says you can't vaginally or anally rape somebody who is drunk to consent, but by not mentioning oral rape, the rapist gets a free pass.

Without question, Oklahoma cops were the creme-de-la-fuckups. Fortunately I didn't have that much interaction with them, but almost every time I did they completely underwealmed me as the most unprofessional grabastic group of miscreants I've ever encountered.
