NBA player shot dead. Entered wrong apartment during visit

http://www.cnn.com/2016/05/28/us/nba-player-fatally-shot/index.html

A Dallas resident told police he heard someone enter his apartment by kicking open the front door, police spokesman DeMarquis Black said in a statement. The resident said "he called out to the individual, but was not answered," and when the resident's bedroom door was kicked open, the resident fired his gun, police said

Dejean-Jones collapsed in the breezeway, police said. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, Black said.
The basketball player's agent, Scott Nichols, said Dejean-Jones was in Dallas to visit his girlfriend for his daughter's first birthday.
This was the first time Dejean-Jones visited her new apartment, Nichols said. Later that night Dejean-Jones came back to the apartment complex but went to the wrong unit on the third floor, just below his girlfriend's fourth-floor apartment, Nichols said.
Police had no immediate response to Nichols' comments.
"There is no information that suggests the deceased Bryce Dejean-Jones knew the apartment resident, or was armed as he entered the apartment," Black said.

Julie Keel, a spokeswoman for Camden Property Trust, the real estate company that owns the apartment complex in Dallas, confirmed that the complex's apartment manager had sent out an email to residents saying that the person who had been shot had been trying to break into "the apartment of an estranged acquaintance" and that this person had "inadvertently" broken into the wrong apartment.

So I am going to guess he didn't expect her to just open the door.

"Sources told ESPN that Dejean-Jones was in town to celebrate his daughter's birthday and was involved in an argument with the child's mother prior to the shooting."

What a bunch of horse dookey that is.

Violent guy gets violent at wrong house and gets shot.

The one thing to another line seems to be trying to justify him kicking down a door as if it would have been OK if he had just kicked in the right door.

that ran a discount building supply store. He said much of his business was in exterior doors as landlords of inexpensive apartments were always having to replace a tenant's door that had been kicked in by a boyfriend/male acquaintance.

I always joked that he should call his business "Slumlord Supply". He sold his business and retired and is now touring the US in a motor home.

That sounds like it would have been a scary/dangerous situation for the girlfriend and the baby.

This just sucks in every way, but you cannot break into homes violently without instilling terror.

I presume that if the dead guy heard a man's voice calling from inside what he thought was his girlfriend's apartment it made him even madder.
