Jurors Begin Deliberations in Alabama Speaker's Ethics Trial

Jurors began deliberations Friday in the ethics trial of the speaker of Alabama's House, weighing whether lawmaker Mike Hubbard used his position to enrich himself or as his defense claims, was the victim of an overzealous prosecution.
The Deep South Republican faces 23 felony ethics charges accusing of using the power and prestige of his political positions to obtain consulting contracts and company investments.
In closing arguments, lawyers gave jurors dueling depictions of Hubbard, a man who led the 2010 GOP takeover of the Alabama Legislature with legislative campaigns based on ending corruption in Montgomery, Ala. Prosecutor W. Van Davis said Hubbard, after being elected speaker, tried to parlay the power of the office into cash.
"This man right here loved power. I think you could sense that through his testimony. It was all about power and it was all about greed," Davis told jurors in closing arguments. "It was never enough for Mike Hubbard," Davis said.
