Romney camp aims to win over Hispanics

http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2012/06/09/immigration_key_in_romney_drive_for_hispanic_votes/

" ...WASHINGTON - Hispanic advisers to Mitt Romney have told him that it is vital that he soften the sharp rhetoric on immigration that he adopted during the Republican primary race and that he work to make inroads with one of the fastest-growing segments of the electorate.

(...)

Spanish-speaking surrogates are being trained, and there are ongoing talks with a major Hispanic advertising firm to work on new television ads that are aimed at Spanish-speakers.

(...)

A reform proposal by Rubio, a potential vice presidential pick, could provide a way for Romney to recast his position on immigration. ..."

Sounds like Romney will not only treat his situation with Hispanics as a marketing and rhetoric problem that can be addressed by expensive advertising and the training of surrogates, but he's also going to go full bore in breathtaking fashion on his etch-a-sketch by ignoring what he said about immigration during the Republican debates and "recast" his policy.

Theyll see right through this. Dems will have a field day running clips of Rmoney attacking immigrants, and his flip-flop on the issue. Latinos arent a monolithic bloc that will automatically embrace Rubio as a VP candidate. And Rubio has a lot of financial baggage that wont withstand close scrutiny.

I should think it would be difficult to penetrate that.

One caveat is that Pres Obama needs to cast himself as "pro-American" and not "anti-Catholic." Other than that, it looks like he has a pretty insurmountable lead in that demographic.

...that no one else does. We're putting up fences to keep Mexicans and Central/South Americans out, yet Cubans need only set foot on US soil, and they're allowed to stay, no ifs, ands or buts. If the repugs think that picking a Cuban as the VP candidate is going to sway the Hispanic vote, they are more deluded that I ever thought.

15. Yes, the repugs think all Hispanics are the same.

Theyre not. And the repugs are in for a rude awakening when they find that Latinos arent going to be swooning over a Rubio VP pick, or buying into an etch-a-sketch immigration policy.

Its not a simple voting bloc. Assuming Latinos would embrace the GOP simply for the picking of a Cuban-American VP would be like assuming women would embrace Palin. Obvious to us, but.pretty.stupid on the part of the GOP.

In fact, Obama's Latino turnout will be depressed because ICE is still deporting low priority cases, despite the many promises and claims that this wouldn't happen.

You can do whatever the hell you want and then "manage" the perception of it to suit your needs.

but I don't see him overtaking the president among this electorate. He's too far behind, and has a stance on the Dream Act that is anathema to their interests.
On another note, I always wonder why they don't try this hard to win support from Black voters or Asian voters. It's as if those other two electorates don't exist to the GOP.
