John Lewis -- a believer in non-violent protest -- is the man who, with Hosea Williams, led the march on Selma that became known as Bloody Sunday, and ended up with a fractured skull.
No one else can teach him how to "grow a spine." His is made of titanium.
ON EDIT: SELMA was a great movie about the march and the people involved in it, for anyone who's interested

Synopsis
Born near Troy, Alabama, on February 21, 1940, John Lewis grew up in an era of segregation. Inspired by Martin Luther King Jr., he joined the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement. Lewis was a Freedom Rider, spoke at 1963's March on Washington and led the demonstration that became known as "Bloody Sunday." He was elected to Congress in 1986 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011.

In 1957, John Lewis left Alabama to attend the American Baptist Theological Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee. There, he learned about nonviolent protest and helped to organize sit-ins at segregated lunch counters. He was arrested during these demonstrations, which upset his mother, but Lewis was committed to the Civil Rights Movement and went on to participate in the Freedom Rides of 1961. Freedom Riders challenged the segregated facilities they encountered at interstate bus terminals in the South, which had been deemed illegal by the Supreme Court. It was dangerous work that resulted in arrests and beatings for many involved, including Lewis.
In 1963, Lewis became chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. That same year, as one of the "Big Six" leaders of the Civil Rights Movement, he helped plan the March on Washington. Lewisthe youngest speaker at the eventhad to alter his speech in order to please other organizers, but still delivered a powerful oration that declared, "We all recognize the fact that if any radical social, political and economic changes are to take place in our society, the people, the masses, must bring them about."
After the March on Washington, in 1964, the Civil Rights Act became law. However, this did not make it easier for African Americans to vote in the South. To bring attention to this struggle, Lewis and Hosea Williams led a march from Selma, Alabama, on March 7, 1965. After crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the marchers were attacked by state troopers. Lewis was severely beaten once more, this time suffering a fractured skull. The violent attacks were recorded and disseminated throughout the country, and the images proved too powerful to ignore. "Bloody Sunday," as the day was labeled, sped up the passage of 1965's Voting Rights Act.

HE HAS VISIBLE SCARS FROM BEING HIT IN THE HEAD WITH A WOODEN CRATE WHILE PROTESTING SEGREGATION. HE HAS NO TIME FOR YOUR SHIT
You should not fuck with Representative John Lewis. You should not even begin to contemplate the process of how you might fuck with Representative John Lewis. He is the admiral of Not Today, Satan. He is the general of Not Fucking Having It.
You may disagree with Representative John Lewis. In Georgia, you may vote against him. You can send angry letters to his office. But do not fuck with Representative John Lewis. He has seen worse than whatever you have to give him, and he has handled it better than you could possibly ever begin to. Since 1959, he has stood up for his beliefs, and he has faced abuse and prison and beatings and violence for it, and not once has he ever backed down. And he is not about to start now.

(23,973 posts)After all, no due process, no right against search and seizure means we can do that and confiscate not only your home and everything in it with no just cause and no warrant, we can send you to Guantanamo because we labeled you a terrorist.
And that nice policeman that you only want to have guns is only more than happy to bash your face in to accomplish it, after all, who are you going to call?
You have no right to call anyone.
YOU can give up your rights, any Democrat willing to abrogate the Constitution is *not a Democrat*.

(2,510 posts)should have been prevented from buying a gun, if he wanted one?
He was on the 'no fly' list, too. Got prevented from boarding a flight in Boston.
I agree that the congress should be allowed to debate these issues, and even demand a vote on them, but using the no-fly list as an exclusive means to prohibit gun purchases is not a very fair plan, if there isn't an effective appeal process built into it. Plenty of people are already on that list who shouldn't be on it, and have a hell of a time getting off it just so they can board an airplane.
I think full background checks are a much better idea for regulating gun purchases.
pnwmom
(108,988 posts)should be improved.
I don't think the no-fly list should be the exclusive means for checking gun purchases. There should also be a universal background check.

Do you stand with those Democrats also, against those dirty Japanese?
They were stupendously wrong then, as are Democrats who want to abrogate the Constitution now.
One cannot actually be a Democrat and be in favor of the elimination of Due Process.
One might be a Fascist though.

(5,762 posts)Total logical fallacy, as is your slippery slope defense.
You are not the arbiter of who is and who isn't a Democrat. I'm a registered Democrat. And I believe the words in the Constitution were put there in a certain order for a reason, as were the words to the Declaration of Independence. The Constitution is a living document and it has to evolve and be evaluated by living minds in real time.
Being (briefly) prevented (by mistake) from purchasing a weapon of mass murder is an INCONVENIENCE. The right to carry firearms in no way trumps my fucking right to live. That's why it's the SECOND amendment.
Don't you dare tell me who I am or what I have a right to.
Ikonoklast
(23,973 posts)I understand your anger.
Must sting a bit to realize that you actually don't care for the rule of law under the Constitution.
You're on a secret list, and need to jump through Byzantine government hoops and deal with several agencies to get your name off of it.
How about if your right to practice your religion is "briefly" abrogated for three years or so?
How about your right of Free Speech?
You have no problem with other people losing their rights because you think it will never be your name on one of those lists.

(5,762 posts)I cared very much for the life of one of the Sandy Hook children, son of a co-worker, who was murdered in his first grade classroom because someone who had no business owning a gun decided it was time to shoot down a classroom full of children and their teachers.

I like my 5th amendment rights.
Even the ACLU says a "no-fly, no-buy" bill is a bad idea. I'm not someone who likes the idea of the government creating secret lists that have no due process attached to them.

Expanded background checks? Sure. But no secret lists that restrict Constitutional rights with no oversight and no due process. I am not going to trash the 1, 2, 4, and 5th amendments just so you can enjoy the illusion of safety.

(8,175 posts)Instead of a no fly no buy bill, how about we repeal the 2nd amendment and take all guns away from civilians, and ban manufacturing and sales of any weapons (other than to the military or police), except for simple hunting rifles/shotguns and pistols that are not semii-auto and can't hold magazines. Only the two or so bullets you can load in them at one time. We could even go back to the musket that was used at the time the 2nd was written. That way nobody has to worry about their civil rights being taken away, even if they behave suspiciously like a mass murderer.
I think that could work.

(8,175 posts)but having an all out war with them is not one of them. They would bring in swat and National Guard, and then the military if necessary. And you think your guns can stand up to that?

(34,177 posts)A reporter was asking John Lewis to comment on Sander's civil rights leadership and activity at an announcement of the CBC Political Action Committee's endorsement of HRC and Lewis to shut down any inference that Bernie may have tried to help black folks.
During his junior year, Sanders, by then president of the university's CORE chapter, led a picket of a Howard Johnson's restaurant in Chicago, part of a coordinated nationwide protest against the motel and restaurant chain's racially discriminatory policies. Sanders eventually resigned his post at CORE, citing a heavy workload, and took some time off from school.
Under Sanders' leadership, the CORE group at University of Chicago joined forces with SNCC's campus chapter, held sit-ins to protest segregation in university-owned apartment buildings, and raised money for voter registration efforts focused on African Americans.

I'm not saying Bernie was an important civil rights leader, but Lewis knew what he was doing. Lewis was helping his candidate.
