day after the New York Times published a bombshell review of Donald Trump's checkered military deferment record, the Republican nominee held up a Purple Heart medal in front of a crowd in Ashburn, Virginia, on Tuesday. He told the audience that a veteran had approached him earlier in the day and offered up his own war decoration for the real estate magnate to keep. "I always wanted to get the Purple Heart," Trump said. "This was much easier."

According to Trump, the man handed over the Purple Heart and urged him to continue "saying what you've been saying"—an apparent vote of support for the presidential hopeful's inflammatory rhetoric.

11. My dad was technically qualified for a purple heart

He was a D-Day. He was the top-kick in a tank patrol that was to be part of the Normandy invasion. As they approached the beach, the flotation collar on his tank failed. He spent the entire invasion treading water off the coast of France. Other boats came by, offering him a ride to shore, but with no gun there was nothing he could have done there but die.

The explosions overhead caused him to bust an eardrum. So he could have qualified for a Purple Heart, but didn't ask for one because so many others he knew had lost a lot more that day.
