Students wear 'White Power' shirts to homecoming activity (MT)

POLSON, Mont. (AP) — Officials at a Montana high school say two students were told to change out of shirts that said "White Power" on the front of one and "Redneck" with a picture of the Confederate battle flag on the other.

Handwritten on the back of the shirts was "Trump 2016 White Pride" ...

Superintendent Rex Weltz says the students changed clothing when asked.

Polson is part of the Flathead Indian Reservation, where a large number of non-Native Americans live.

1. In public education settings there are laws that make it legal to disallow "attractive nuisances."

In these cases, where the learning climate is negatively effected, First Amendment rights of the few don't override the other rights of the many.

Students can bend knees at extracurricular events, but they can't "voice" prejudice in the curricular climate.

In a public place you see something offensive you can just walk away. But at a school if you walked out, you would be punished.

it alleviates something offensive to them.

It applies to a lot of things, and many are opposed to banning them because "we" like them. Censorship can be applied in many ways; in schools, it should be about avoiding offence, not avoiding having particular groups not be offended.

Taken to extremes though, attempting to provide a safe space for everybody, schools become truly oppressive.

yells of "fire" in an educational setting need take precedence of the learning climate or the classroom content.

Race superiority proclaimed on shirts in a mixed race public school hurts the learning climate, and parents need to be brought in to address such issues. They need some educating about the larger goals of education, too.

Did they weave critters they trapped that morning into their hair? Or is it road kill?
