Fredericksburg hears case for renaming Jefferson Davis Highway (VA)

Virginia’s General Assembly voted in 1922 to designate U.S. 1 in Virginia as Jefferson Davis Highway . Other southern states along the East Coast highway took similar honorary steps.

The name, due to its associations with the Confederacy and slavery, has come under fire in other localities, including Alexandria, where the city council voted last month to remove Davis’ name from its stretch of U.S. 1.
