Recent disconcerting revelations show a distressing level of connection between right-wing media (breitbart), MSM (WSJ), government officials (Senator(s), FBI) and a openly hostile foreign power (Russia) that defies normal reasoning and verges on sounding like a conspiracy theory except it, by all available accounts, is unfolding before our eyes.
These are very distressing developments that give every appearance of a coup d'état unfolding in the shadows.
As hyperbolic as that may sound and no doubt melodramatic, it does not change the reality of the series of events that is currently playing out in real time through news stories and tweets and exchanges of formal letters between different powerful entities within and without our government.
Someone is playing musical chairs with our politics and we the people may be the ones that end up without a seat when the music stops.

(101,361 posts)They want a misogynistic bigot who wants to slash taxes for the ultra-rich, and protections for workers, in charge. Suddenly, they don't care that his 'foreign policy' is "Putin knows best", or that he's too ignorant to know what the nuclear triad is, but will be in charge of it - and asks why can't he use nuclear weapons anyway? They don't care he says the US military should engage in pillage, by stealing Iraqi's oil, or run NATO as a protection racket. They don't care that 'Trump University' is appearing in court on fraud charges.
It's not the shadows that worry me - it's the attitude of almost half of the America people. They can't actually say what the email 'problem' is (if it were obviously illegal, then the State Department wouldn't have gone along with it in the first place), but they'll listen to the Republican cries of "this is awful", while ignoring Trump's obvious unfitness for office.

(1,429 posts)40% are either (usually all 3) racists, sexists, and homophobes.
Their delusional and dangerous form of christianity backstops their horrific worldview. Anyone who thinks it is just going to die out due to old age of the most virulent hate mongers who are in positions of power is mistaken. There are dramatic and pervasive inter-generational transfers of these bigoted worldviews going on daily in tens of millions of households.
As the demographics of the nation change with an ever quickening pace, you are going to have a further entrenchment alongs the lines of white priviledge and desperation. The demagogues on the right n' white side will (with subtle, sophisticated neurolinguistic programming) use very piece of bad news to further scapegoat the "other". This will occur at MSM, internet, religious, social, and multiple other formal and informal levels.
It's going to be hideous, vile, violent, and used by the nefarious power structures to ensure instability in order to divide and conquer.
