(182,805 posts)There are a lot of Republicans there. They are pissed that Comey didn't recommend indictment even though the agents reviewing it voted unanimously not to indict. Comey is getting a lot of resignation letters and moral is bad.
That's my assessment from reading various articles.

(115 posts)Comey knows he won't stay on after the election. He is getting replaced no matter what.
He had three choices. All bad...
a) Ignore the new information and keep the case closed. It's virtually guaranteed that the information would leak at some point and the FBI is put into a compromising position.
b) Wait until after the election to restart the investigation. This also looks like bias or favoritism. Also takes the chances of a leak at any time prior to that and then he doesn't get to frame the conversation or context. FBI looks bad for different reasons depending on who wins.
c) Release now with the ability to frame the conversation. No chance of leaks.
There is no way that he pleases everyone so he picks the one with the least blowback for the FBI in the long term. He can point to all the correspondence and back and forth that we saw for the last year plus as precedent.
