I pulled up behind another car and the inspector approached his car. The driver got out and they shook hands and had a bit of a slap the back kinda moment.
When it as my turn, the inspector walked up to my car and said, "Give me the keys and go sit on that bench." When the inspections were done, the man on man experience was a handshake and another slap on the back moment. When MY inspection was done, the inspector handed me the papers and said, "go pay inside."
This is what women deal with every single day in every part of our lives.
Hillary is no different. She is a woman and despite the fact that "some" people want desperately to believe that sexism doesn't exist. It does. In every aspect of women's lives....it happens regularly...daily...sometimes hourly.
Even when doing normal daily chores. Like getting your car inspected.
I'm with her!!!

(46,166 posts)Anyhow, that's what her details sounded like to me.
I guess it was pointing out the touching, hand shaking and slap on the back, as an indication of friendliness that was not done with her that made me think it was about that.

(46,166 posts)But we know how friendliness can be expressed in the tone of our words and other behavior like a simple smile.

(2,116 posts)WTH kind of equal rights is that? maybe she thought the guy *shouldn't* have gotten that treatment, and that the boys club routine is a problem in itself. sure, it's possible that they knew each other, but please don't try to kid yourself or anybody else about the existence of the boys' club mentality. can you blame anybody if they "jump to conclusions" after seeing it a thousand times before?

Since you are responding I am curious was he rude to you or just dry?
Seems odd to me to feel upset about someone not treating a woman the same as they would a man in a mixed gender environment. At least when it comes to touching. Since you mentioned the handshakes and backslaps it seems to have a significance for you.

(17,663 posts)A handshake and all that physical contact is really not a normal thing in that context otherwise. It may not be about gender at all. Probably not actually. Gosh.
But I completely agree that sexism exists and all that, sadly.

(59,503 posts)I would hazard a guess that maybe the inspector actually knew the man - thus the slap on the back. I doubt he slaps all men on the back. Not to mention, you do not claim there was a difference in the inspection, the production of paperwork or where or what needed to be paid.
I also wonder what your reaction would have been if he shook your hand and slapped your back. I assume you would say that he was over familiar and very unprofessional.

(14,854 posts)... I've had a few take it the wrong way. Like they thought I was about to grab their "kitty cat" or something!
I once complimented an OLD woman's perfume when I was in my 20's as we stood in line at a bank, and the lady looked upset before she told me that she was married! It was a little insulting to me, to be honest, but I hid it.
I've also had totally innocent pleasantries that resulted in women (one of them a married co-worker with five kids) "pursuing" me.

(2,338 posts)I don't know. However, his "get out of your car and go sit on the bench" came off as a bit rude.
As I have said before, this campaign has made me notice things like this more, whereas before, I would have just ignored it as being normal daily life.

(45,447 posts)I get it.
But we don't know if that's the real reason. If you know someone, they might be more friendly than if they don't know you.
I've encountered plenty of rude service people and it might be because of race. I've also encountered many friendly people too.
Either way, I make an effort to be civil with everyone I encounter. I voted for a woman President and for congress and lots of other elections. This isn't my first time interacting with Hillary either. She was my senator when I lived in NY state.
I'm with her!

(9,123 posts)My husband is suffering from dementia and inspections and all business is going through me. On top of all the stress is this new brazen misogyny that was already in existence before Trump.
I always imagined that being a baby boomer would provide lots of allies to fight with once I reached my 60's. But divisiveness is fostered and exploited. No way can we become socially responsible as a society if we are constantly attacking one another.
We have got to wake up to this.

(5,325 posts)For all you know the fella ahead of you said or did some small thing that you might not have been able to see or hear that initiated the exchange with the inspector. My philosophy is that I need to be as genial as I would like others to be toward me. Often first.
Maybe it's just that I'm a fairly outgoing person in general.......I talk to just about everyone every chance I get.......but I rarely have that experience. I probably would have gotten out and, especially if I'd seen the exchange with the customer ahead of me (which would give me the impression that the inspector is probably at least relatively affable), held out my hand to shake and said "How's it going? How 'bout those Cubbies!!" or some such thing. People are almost always friendly in return.
