After the election of Trump, I saw a parallel between some of his voters, and the way that some former (current?) DUers normalized, or minimized, the odious white-nationalist opinions of authors they promoted.
Where some Trump voters agreed with and supported his white nationalist leanings, leanings quickly reinforced by Trump's appointment of Steve Bannon as Senior Strategist, there were others who chose to overlook his racism and misogyny. They agreed with Trump on parts of his message, and decided that his odious opinions weren't enough to disqualify him.
Similarly, there were posters here that shared content from racist asshats like Paul Craig Roberts. Those posters agreed with some of what Roberts had to say, and decided that his well-documented white nationalism wasn't enough to disqualify him as someone to be promoted.
And I believe that's a dangerous attitude that has to change.
Bigotry, in any form, isn't compatible with progressive values.
I hope that here, in Trump-era DU, we'll all raise our voices to condemn content from racists, bigots and homophobes.

(5,551 posts)I know that if we want to win elections again we're going to have to reach out to the people who voted for trump this go around. Of course, by we I mean party officials and politicians.
Me? Fuck that. I have friends who voted for McCain, friends who voted for Romney. No one who voted for Trump is my friend. And I'm not letting anyone off the hook. Giving white nationalism a pass for any reason is condoning it.

(89,261 posts)those on the so called left will excuse it by saying they are criticizing israel . and those on the right will excuse it by saying they support israel(therefore htey just can't be anti jewish).
and often the specific issue has nothing to do with israel.

(53,975 posts)I posted to Facebook about that POS, Bannon, and someone went off about Obama being an anti-Semite. When I explained he isn't, I was "told" he was a Muslim (he isn't) and he hates Israel (he doesn't). Of course, I also remember the horrible attacks in Europe the past year, and saw comments about "well, where's the proof the anti-Semitic attack took place" and for the ones where there were actually dead Jews, immediately the "defense" (they love to call it "explaining, but not necessarily supporting" ) is "Well, look how Israel treats the Palestinians."
Have you also noticed some of the people "outraged" by anti-Semitism from the right, don't seem to mind it when it is coming from our side, sometimes even spewing it themselves (and 'splaining how it isn't really anti-Semitism)?

(89,261 posts)bigoted attacks should be condemned in itself. some of them think it's ok because it's against someone like kissinger or netanyahu. it's like saying it's ok to use the n word on ben carson .

(53,975 posts)It always amazes me who, ok, not really, uses those types of "excuses" when it is some Jew they don't like.
ETA: I dislike it as much as I do anytime a male homophobe spews his homophobia/heterosexism, he is automatically a "secret homo" himself (this is never (or I don't see it) ascribed to homophobic women). Try, as a gay man, to explain the homophobia behind such accusations and people who aren't gay feel they are being "homosplained" to. I mean, a gay man feels offended, and it is the person who isn't gay is the real victim of offense.
