Russia Leaves International Criminal Court

Russia announced Wednesday that it was withdrawing its signature from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, signaling its departure from the organization altogether.

Russia joins South Africa, Burundi and Gambia in leaving the court this year.

The Russian foreign ministry denounced the court as "one-sided and inefficient."

"The court did not live up to the hopes associated with it and did not become truly independent," the ministry said.

"In these conditions one cannot speak of trust in the International Criminal Court," The Times of Israel reported the ministry said, noting that the decision to leave was made by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Tuesday, the ICC published a report that called the 2014 annexation of Crimea an occupation.
