Poll: Dems favor Biden, Sanders for 2020 nomination

Poll: Dems favor Biden, Sanders for 2020 nomination
Jessie Hellmann
The Hill

Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders lead the field of potential Democratic presidential nominees in 2020, a Public Policy Polling (PPP) survey released Tuesday shows.

When Democratic voters are asked to pick from a field of nine Democratic candidates, 31 percent pick the vice president and 24 percent favor the Vermont senator to be the Democratic nominee.

Another 16 percent of poll respondents said they would vote for Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) if she ran, while 14 percent were undecided.

Biden and Sanders are 74 and 75, respectively.

This is fun to think about, but I don't think Sanders or Biden will be running in 2020.

Tue Dec 13, 2016, 04:07 PM
Dec 2016

Then when given options they picked three of the oldest to top out their choices.

http://www.publicpolicypolling.com/pdf/2015/PPP_Release_National_121316.pdf

On one hand they say they want a younger candidate, one who's never run for
President. 57% of Democrats say they want their candidate to be under the age of
60, and 77% say they want their candidate to be under the age of 70. Only 8%
actually want a candidate who's in their 70s, with another 15% expressing no
opinion in regards to the age of their candidate.

Beyond wanting a younger candidate, only 25% of Democrats say they want their
candidate in 2020 to be someone who has run for President before. 41% would
prefer someone who's never run before, and 34% say they're not sure one way or
the other.

But despite saying that they generically want a younger candidate who hasn't run
for President before, the top 2 choices of Democrats for 2020 at this very early
stage are...people in their 70s who have run for President before.

Joe Biden leads the way for Democrats with 31% to 24% for Bernie Sanders, and
16% for Elizabeth Warren. They're the only folks we tested with meaningful support for the nomination at this point. Cory Booker gets 4%, Al Franken and
Kirsten Gillibrand each get 3%, Sherrod Brown and Andrew Cuomo each get 2%,
and Julian Castro gets less than 1%.

Biden would be 78. Clinton would be 74. Sanders would be 79. All very much older than anyone we've elected before. I have nothing against any of them, I've points of agreement and disagreement with each one of them. At some point we have move forward as a Party. Our Democratic Party Congressional leadership is significantly older than republicans.

No, age itself is not the issue. It's that we are not fostering leadership in our younger membership and not promoting young involvement in politics enough.
As they age up they will eventually want to retire or die and our replacement choices are few: either people as old as them or people that have had few to no leadership options.
There is a direct correlation to our inability to make gains in governorships and state legislatures and for that talent to move up to federal office.
We have people that hold their positions for so long and no one wishes to challenge a fellow Party member or would likely get support for such a challenge.

"Biden would be 78. Clinton would be 74. Sanders would be 79. All very much older than anyone we've elected before."

The useless poll itself even makes mention.

I also have an op stating the importance of building from the ground up. That is one of our biggest failings. The ground up approach in itself means new an younger faces collaborating within the party and fighting for its future. It extremely important and an area we need to be better.

My point in the post you replied to was simple. Sanders recently spent hundreds of millions and a long time campaigning and comes in second in this crap poll. I believe that is truly one of the only things of meaning that can be extrapolated from this poll. It should be a wake up call to some.

I bet extremely few polled can talk about one thing Sanders or Biden lead the effort in passing. And that's with Sanders recently spending hundreds of millions to get his personal message out. Yet Biden handily wins in the poll. It's really a bs poll all the way around.

The only time the older candidate has won when there was a measurable difference was when Reagan beat Carter and Mondale. The first was a unique set of corrupt circumstances, and the actor, bad as he was could present himself as young and vibrant. In contrast to Mondale, Reagan did appear to be full of energy. It's my understanding that Reagan was showing signs of dementia during his second term.
