We won twenty states. We won the pop vote by 3,000,000 while losing the E C by 80,000 votes. To our eternal detriment Trump pulled the electoral equivalent of a Royal Flush. Everything broke right for him.

(6,169 posts)from California this spring. If so, we'll be bringing three blue votes to Virginia, although they did go blue this time, didn't they? Hopefully we can help keep them blue.
Some friends and I were talking about the idea of organizing liberals from places like California to move to swing states. We could start a group kind of like the New England Emigrant Aid Company. 😀https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England_Emigrant_Aid_Company

(108,996 posts)but no one ever adds those votes together because they're scattered over a number of separate states.
CA loses both in the Electoral College and the Senate because it is such a heavily populated state but only has 2 Senators -- the same number as Utah or Vermont.

And poll after poll shows that the American people support it, in increasing numbers.
So on one hand you have "leaders" like DWS, who goes to the Times in the middle of an election season and doubles down on reefer madness, or Gov. Malloy of CT who has an absolute fucking temper tantrum over Mass. legalizing pot (and before you go "aha- but the east coast is legalizing too!": look at the difference between how Oregon's legislature handled the passage of legalization, and the foot-dragging they're doing right now in Boston) .. compare that to someone like, say, Gavin Newsom.
The West Coast has been ahead of the curve on all sorts of matters. And there are 50 million of us out here in reliably blue states. Why the fuck are we never represented on the Presidential ticket, etc?
dflprincess
(28,082 posts)there was an article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune in the last year or so examining political leanings in the state and it concluded that Minnesota is more closely aligned to New England and eastern New York in its political views than to the rest of the midwest or other region of the country. (Though after the Republican take over of our legislature in November, I'm not so sure.)
The theory for this is that the largest group of "immigrants" to the state when it was settled was not from other countries but from New England and from families that had been in New England for generations (this would certainly be true of my paternal grandfather's family). These people held on to their "New England views" and passed them on to other immigrants and to their descendants.

(16,878 posts)When I hear "Well Clinton's majority only counts because of California..", my immediate response is "Why arbitrarily pick California? Why not Texas, Florida, etc". Because the right has no love for solid blue states other than for their financial resources. Their citizens are view as less American and, as such, their votes are easily dismissed. I feel the same way about Denver and the surrounding area. I live 100 miles outside of Denver, and have decided to move back to the city for all the reasons you said.
Yes, I agree, saying Dem votes are superfluous is a noxious, right wing sentiment. I hear it from the whiny Republicans around me because our district includes Boulder, so we get a Democratic Congressman and State Senator. Drives the local haters crazy, always whining about the stinking Boulder libruls, the people's republic of Boulder, etc. The most prosperous city in the state, mind you, and how their votes shouldn't count in our county.. sorry republicans, no gerrymandering in CO, yet!

I just linked the post with the quote verbatim. That is the antithesis of gossip:
ˈɡäsəp/
noun
1.
casual or unconstrained conversation or reports about other people, typically involving details that are not confirmed as being true.
"he became the subject of much local gossip"
synonyms: rumor(s), tittle-tattle, whispers, canards, tidbits; More
verb
1.
engage in gossip.
"they would start gossiping about her as soon as she left"
synonyms: spread rumors, spread gossip, talk, whisper, tell tales, tittle-tattle, tattle; informaldish the dirt
"she gossiped about Dean's wife"
In fact if you doubt my veracity you can ask Ed Hopper or MFN008 to share the verbatim quote I sent to them without comment.

(7,921 posts)We do not know how many votes remained un-counted in Detroit, or were miscounted or adjusted by one actor or several in Waukesha county, or were tilted the other way in NC, FLA, Ohio and other GOP controlled states. For all we know similar majorities to those recorded in California were actually voted in predominantly Democratic precincts other states.
The evidence suggests that there were several modes of interference and not only by hacks. Ohio turned off the system that recorded and could verify the vote on their voting machines. A system which could also have protected them from outside interference.
...And then there are Crosscheck and other nasty methods used to dump the recorded registrations of millions of minority Democratic voters in a number of GOP controlled states. I heard it was as high as 5 million total but I can't confirm it. Where we know about it there were 350,000 to 500,000 or more in each instance.
The whining about "only California" is a diversion from the facts and the questions they raise. It is also an attempt to marginalize California voters as un-representative.
A 50,000 vote differential would be a regional bias. 3 million is 1/2 the votes counted in NC and several other states. The GOP mouthpieces lie knowingly when they disrespect the results. I'd like to see how they feel when 3 million people show up to surround the White House or the Capitol Building. We know how scared Nixon was when we marched around the Pentagon.
