We have (had) two high-mileage cars to replace. One is already done, and we're extremely very super happy with our choice of yet another South Korean car built in the USA. This, despite the fact that we seriously considered 'coming home' and buying a Ford. Ultimately, we decided against the Ford because of overwhelmingly poor reviews and reliability reports, and their horrible on-board computer system.
Now, Bill Ford is coming forward to back up Donald Trump and provide him some cover. To hell with Ford. We gave them a chance, still have another car to buy. Now I am virtually certain it will NOT be a Ford. I'm kinda likin' that Chevy Cruze.

(1,551 posts)Ford. Electrical issues, brake issues, transmission issues, and I only have 5K miles on it.

(19,348 posts)The Avalon is still going strong at 200K miles.
I am looking at an Audi A7. Their reliability has been quite strong this past decade.
Maybe a Lexus GS.
My brother loves his Accord.
On the other hand, my Mother's 92' Taurus was a piece of s**t.
-Why wires were falling out of the starter we will never know.
-Front brake calipers at 25K (warranty covered it though)
-2 Alternators
-Radiator hose at 20k.
-Oil pan leak at 50k.
-Oil pump at 70k.
-Front windows leaked in rain.
We dumped it in 2000 with just 92K miles.

(31,464 posts)A 2007 Santa Fe with 200k miles on it, still running great, looks like new (almost). And a 2006 Elantra (the Saab 93 clone) with 150k miles on it, also still running strong. They're both paid for, obviously, so we kept them. I'd have no qualms about taking either on a cross-country trip.
We thought it was smart to have a newer car with low mileage. We shopped Fords. Meh. Wasn't impressed at all, other than the styling. We really wanted a Chevy Volt, but it wasn't practical for us. And the Chevy Cruz was too small.
In the end, we chose another Hyundai, a psuedo-Genesis -- Sonata 2.0 Turbo Limited Ultra (yeah, sounds stupid, but it's a lot of fun). The car is insane! Absolutely no regrets. It gets great reviews from all of the major auto magazines, whereas the Fords are all generally considered crap. So now Bill Ford's move makes me feel even better about our choice.
I still could have gone for a Chevy, but with the track record of our two other cars, it was difficult to make the switch. Oh well.

(1,943 posts)Trained me a long time ago about Ford vehicles. Peeling paint yada yada. I replaced it a long time ago with a Dodge Cummins diesel. Which was made in Saltillo Mexico in the year 2000. Ford does not have to be afraid that I'm going to purchase one of their products, especially after this preening for Twitler. Henry Ford was something of an opinionated sort concerning observers of Judaism, no? Does not help their cause, far as I'm concerned.

(5,126 posts)I always thought it was patriotic... American made, union made. I have never been in a job that was union but thought it was important for solidarity even as I watched some union members (not UAW, but Steelworkers, IAW, etc) drive imports to our local dem meet ups. I think I am done holding on to that. I'm not sure what my next vehicle purchase will be, but I don't feel at this point that union made will be one of my requirements. I still support unions, and solidarity but I just don't think my loyalty to the UAW in my vehicle decisions matters as much as I previously thought.
