A diplomat is received by the country he or she has been posted to in a ceremony. The ambassador meets the head of state of that nation and presents his or her Letter of Credence. The head of state can accept or reject the letter. Problem is, you need a pretty damn good reason for rejecting one because it's basically an act of war to do so. "She's dumber than a damn rock and will probably eat all the moose in Canada and start a fight club in the basement of the embassy" is not good enough, although she'd do it.

Chris Christie, Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin are likely on shortlist for next US ambassador to Canada.

Then there was this news item an a satire site in 2013...

Obama Appoints Sarah Palin Ambassador to Canada

'Keep Your Friends Close and Your Enemies Refrigerated'

...

“This will be a new era in relations with Canada, thanks to the appointment of Ms. Palin,” Carney asserted. “They may end up hating us for the choice but at least it gets her out of our country. The best thing is, when is the last time the international press reported anything the U.S. Ambassador to Canada ever said? This will shut her up for a good four years, if she stays with it that long, of course, considering her previous track record. Besides, if she sticks to Alberta, the Canadian people probably won’t even notice her as she would blend right in.”

Canada is one of our best friends and and there isn't much anyone can do to screw it up. So, give Palin this safe job and watch while she manages to humiliate herself and her boss.

Beats giving her something like Japan.

She'll be able to see Canada from her back porch. Assuming she bothers to notice.

it won't be Palin. She has to stay in Alaska in case Putin rears his ugly head. Ooops my bad. It will definitely be Palin, trump wants her out of the way when Putin does rear his ugly head.

She won't be able to take her Midnight Ride to warn the Russians the Americans are there, willing to fight.
