The gulf between "us" and "them" is inconceivably huge

Our culture - decency, openness, trust, sharing, truth, creativity, science, arts, diversity, drive to positive change, inclusiveness, cooperation, acceptance - and curiosity.

Their culture - indecency, close mindedness, paranoia, fear, selfishness and greed, lust for power, lies as being accepted, dogma, mistrust of science and progress, authoritarianism, hatred of change (and desire to return to a time that only exists in their minds), division, naked nationalism - but most of all, ignorance.

The biggest are the lies - the recreating of history every time they open their mouths.

I just can't see how this can go well moving forward. The schisms are too great.

And the only solution is to "de-program" them. They need to be educated. We need more progressive mainstream media outlets. We need to make the real truth about Democrats and Democratic policies available in rural America, as well as urban areas.

and if you think about all the folks in your town/neighborhood with whom you work on various projects for betterment in your community, the "us-them" dichotomy isn't helpful.

And it's the local efforts that will make all our communities less fragile.

But right now - doing positive things around my gardening and writing. But I find it hard to respect anyone who supports Trump. At all.

Will it change? I don't know, but I can't see how it's going to change for the better just yet. The Trump voters I know don't want to bend to any of our issues, which would mean we'd be doing all the compromising. As you pointed out, our beliefs are so different from theirs, I can't see us being willing to give up the core of who we are to appease them.

I don't know how this is all going to end, but a massive reconciliation doesn't seem likely.
