The investigation of James Comey is exactly what the country needs

The announcement by the Justice Department’s inspector general that his office will look into FBI Director James B. Comey’s handling of Hillary Clinton’s emails reopens painful questions about the 2016 election, but it is also welcome news. The country needs this — an objective, independent and thorough investigation of issues that have roiled the country for months and continue to stir heated debate.

The investigation will address allegations that Comey violated established Justice Department and FBI policies and procedures in his July 5, 2016, public announcement concerning the Hillary Clinton email investigation. And it will explore allegations that Comey’s Oct. 28 and Nov. 6 letters to Congress, which jolted the presidential election — and may have changed its outcome — were improper.

The impact of Comey’s actions can never be definitively known. But it is important, for the Justice Department and for the country, to obtain a detailed accounting of what happened and why; to assign blame where it is warranted; and to understand how similar situations can be prevented

In addition to looking into the actions of the FBI director regarding the email investigation, the probe will look into whether the FBI’s deputy director should have recused himself from the investigation because of his wife’s political involvement; whether a high-ranking Justice Department official or others improperly disclosed non-public information to both the Clinton and Trump campaigns; and whether the timing of the FBI’s election eve Freedom of Information Act disclosures relating to Bill Clinton’s 2001 pardon of Marc Rich was based on inappropriate considerations.

But the focus of the investigation — and the public’s interest in it — will remain on what Comey did and why.

He wanted to steer the election and momentum away from Hillary. It was by all accounts and independent judgment, improper.

There. What now? I don't think there's any question that is what he did. He is a scumbag and this was a scumbag move. What more will an investigation tell us? It won't get Trump impeached. It won't give us any more power in the Senate or the House. It won't give us control of any more state houses.

At this point that doesn't get us anything other than schadenfreude. What we need to be focusing on is taking back the Senate and the House. We need to start worrying about what candidates we will run against Republicans, and how we will sure up our support to defend our open seats.

...far exceed any benefit we'd get by looking backward on a particular and specific issue then yes.

But what it will tell us is what we already know. And for that matter what Comey and others have already admitted (pressure from Republicans, etc.).

An objective investigation would document Comey's malfeasance and, ideally, would expose the massive fraud leading to the illegitimacy of Trump's "election."

There is no possible benefit in ignoring Comey's actions, just as there is no downside to pursuing them.

I didn't say anything about those issues.

The post I was responding to was about Comey releasing the additional e-mail information a week before the election.

Those other issues can and should be investigated because they can and will impact the future.

Comey played politics with his office and the election. We know he played politics with his office and the election. What more are we going to find out with relation to that specific issue, that is going to help us moving forward?

... MiniPoot and Russia erroring on the side of no other agency head with investigation powers doing the same thing he did 11 days before an election.

Investigate later while he's in jail ... I can't imagine a GOP prez not doing this very thing

released in late 2002, interrupted by the 9/11 emergency of course. Remember that? Probably not, page 62 of your daily news.

It's fixed, rigged, stolen, looted, long gone and gone forever,(our America) thanks to helpful Repub legislators.
