?1484496462From the Department of You Cant Make This Crap Up: Republicans are having a major meltdown over questionsparticularly from civil rights icon Rep. John Lewisover the legitimacy of a Trump presidency, and they want President Obama to step up and do something about it. (Warning, choking danger: Do not have food or liquids in your mouth while reading this.)
Donald Trump's team is still plenty steamed after a leading House Democrat described Trump as an illegitimate president - and there are now calls for President Barack Obama to act.
Trump's incoming White House chief of staff says the congressman, civil rights leader John Lewis of Georgia, is being "irresponsible" and has started a "firestorm."
Reince Priebus tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that Obama should "step up" and "call it what it is - it's wrong what is happening, it's wrong how some of these Democrats are treating President-elect Trump."
Indeed. Its time for Barack Obama to step upfor the tiny fingered, popular vote losing puppet of Putin, who spent eight years leading the birther jag-off movementand defend Trumps legitimacy. He should get right on that.

(20,135 posts)Democrats call Trump illegitimate because multiple intelligence agencies have confirmed a foreign enemy interfered with the election, and because he LOST the popular vote. (Yes the popular vote is irrelevant legally but it shows the American people DID NOT WANT him to be president.)

(37,158 posts)And it goes back farther than PBO.
After the 92 election Rush Limbaugh rallied Republicans with the claim that Bill Clinton was only "technically" president because he only won a plurality of the vote, not a majority. It was part of their justification for the constant attacks and scandal-mongering. Naturally, that "principle" went out the window in 2000 and 2016.
Hell, take it back to 1960 with the "Mayor Daley stole the election for Kennedy" mythology. No matter what happened in Chicago, the election didn't hinge on Illinois. If it had gone Republican, Nixon still would have lost. But the truth makes poor fodder for axe-grinding, so to this day they claim the election was "stolen".

(2,505 posts)... but I have heard issues like this raised before. I remember, a decade ago some were worried that W. Bush and his cronies might try and "stay on" somehow. However this question was answered very definitely by constitutional experts, who said that no matter what happened, the president in power, ceased automatically to be president by (I believe) the inauguration date. This was automatic. The same would hold true for Obama, unless I suppose he could use his powers to arrest (or something similar) Trump. Even if such an extreme measure could be taken, Obama's term would end on schedule.
In other words, I'm not sure there's much Obama can do, even if he wanted to, with the unlikely support of much of the GOP. However that is a question for a constitutional expert. But my guess would be that if it were easy to block and incoming president, the constitutional consequences and issues would be severe.
Just in case it looks like I'm pretending to have answers, I don't. But I am trying in my own way, to frame the questions.
