(59,501 posts)How many male Chelseas do you know? The OP DID implicitly specify a gender by using Chelsea rather than Bradley. Why do you have a problem with the pronoun used?

(59,501 posts)Had she JUST put out the video of the atrocities in Iraq, I would have been extremely in favor of her being treated as a whistle blower - and had she still been tried and sentenced - for her commutation. The Iraqi tape gave credence to allegations well known both in the Arab world and the US, but the problem was the atrocities, not that a film of it was now in the public domain. Also, by the time it was released it was already old news.
However, after that - likely prodded by Wikileaks to give them more -- she dumped lots of raw State Department cables that were then put out by wikileaks. This meant that people who were sources for information in risky countries were identified. It also meant that raw reports were given a credibility, they never otherwise would have had. Some pieces of "information" would be quickly discredited when examined in the context of other information.
You could say that the leaks of the cable did embarrass Secretary Clinton on a few issues. Even more, you can draw a direct line - from the cables embarrassing Clinton on a few issues, to the reaction of the Obama administration being a motive for harming the Clinton campaign.
However, Manning could not control forces that she set in affect once she handed over the content of the cables. I do not see her as a hero, I see her as a very troubled person, who even after she is released will need a lot of help.

(67,782 posts)...is if Assange and Snowden travel to the United States to face their crimes. Manning was duped, the other two openly violated the law.

(27,985 posts)Snowden is a hero. Whistle blowers used to have protections.
George II
(67,782 posts).....or Snowden giving my information to the Chinese and Russians?
Any coincidence that he first went to Hong Kong and then Moscow? Any coincidence that since he's been in Moscow they've learned how to hack into just about any system that they want?
Finally, whistle blowers don't flee the country.

(14,173 posts)Many thought he was just a low level computer operator, but unbeknownst to us has the ability to hack the most secure systems in the US, and was helping his new buddy Putin with this which cumulated in his grand plan of having Donald Trump become President of the USA! Brilliant! Because Trump is going to pardon him as soon as he gets into office.

I wonder if she will be able to tell us about the torture she endured while in military prison for 7 years?

(10,715 posts)...while I recognize there was wrongdoing, the cruelty of the punishment was a far greater thing. I'm glad she'll go free, and I hope she'll be able to have the sort of opportunities the rest of us enjoy going forward.

(6,034 posts)... who helped put Wikileaks on the map. Why is it a good thing?
Wikileaks is one of the reason we have a the orange man as POTUS?
Maybe 2045 to to harsh but i do not believe she should get out so soon.

(1,717 posts)Folks, we need more whistle blowers, not fewer.
If we had them, we'd be able to stay out of dumb wars
(like Vietnam & Iraq), and the US might become more of a
good global citizen by not trashing democracies such as
Chile, Greece, Brazil, Guatemala, Iran and etc.
Generally it is the US government that is the law breaker,
and the whistle blowers are following their oaths to the
constitution by exposing it.

On the other hand, there is this . . from NPR

It's just amazing how some folks can call for Manning's scalp
while the torturers walk free among us . .
