Is it possible that Donald Trump opposed TPP and pulled the United States out of the free trade agreement because he and his son-in-law want to do business in China and TPP would have hurt China? TPP was meant to counter the rise of China and China was going to be left out of TPP. Did Trump and his son-in-law think it would be easier to do business in China if they could tell the leaders of China that they killed TPP?

(20,911 posts)He just knows FOX news hated it, and so does his lobbyist friends.
My natural assumption until proven otherwise is Trump doesn't really know any of the inner workings of any policy he rants about, advocates, loves, hates, and will sign into law/repeal.

(52,384 posts)i think he was just reading the crowd; it was something obama was doing on which he could focus the resentment of the white working class that forms the core of his base. plus, it ties into the xenophobia.
i do think he'll be able to make money with a china-led agreement, though he'd probably be able to make money on any reasonable trade deal. in truth, the worst thing for his personal finances would be a trade war.

It also will take a huge wind out of all the marching done against him. Indeed, he can play it off as listening to the people who marched, which is likely what will happen.

Either way it's not good for American workers.

(54,770 posts)Clinton had to at least claim she was against it too to keep from being blamed for not caring about white working class folks in Ohio, etc.
Sad fact is, by our reneging on TPP it's going to be hard to find other countries who will trust us on something like this. That will make some happy here who believe long-term we will be better off essentially trading among ourselves by making life difficult for foreign countries like we did back in the 50s and 60s. I think we will pay dearly for Trump's action and what Democrats would have forced Clinton to do (renege as well), had she won. Obama had his eye on the future and got bashed for it.

(9,350 posts)The more I learn about TPP I think Hillary Clinton was right when she said it was the "gold standard" of free trade deals. It was going to allow good from the United States to be sold in foreign countries while at the same time moving closer to American standards on wages and labor rights. It seemed like America was going to come out the big winner in that trade deal. Now, it seems China can create a regional deal without the United States and without the higher wage and labor standards.
