He has only been in office for a few weeks, and Trump has distinguished himself as one of the worst Presidents ever, and maybe also one of the most hated Presidents ever.
The only modern comparison is the detestable Richard Nixon. At least Nixon had a brain to go along with his Megalomania, Bigotry, Dark Paranoia, and Enemies List.
When Sally Yates of the Justice Department was fired for standing against an unlawful and un-American Executive Order, she was being loyal to the Constitution. The Trump Regime described it as a "betrayal" of the Justice Department. In fact, it demonstrated loyalty to the Law and the Constitution.
Nixon had the same problem when he dismissed a Special Prosecutor investigating the Watergate scandal (see "Saturday Night Massacre" . Government Officials owe their loyalty to the Constitution and the American People. Not personal loyalty to a Demagogue, like the Orange Dictator Trump.
Still, it took Nixon years to make his mark as a truly awful and detestable President. Trump has established himself as horrible within a couple of weeks. Nixon was forced to resign to avoid impeachment. We could do well to study that history to learn any lessons that might apply to stopping the Trump Regime.
I call it a Regime rather than an Administration, because Administrations are bound by laws and principles. Trump is trying to rule as an Authoritarian/Autocrat using Presidential Orders. He is thus far virulently anti-democratic, and shows no respect for law and due process. He needs to be reined in by the Legislative and Judicial Branches. The People need to keep demonstrating and being active to ensure that the heat stays on our elected officials. The Media must do its part also and continue to shine light on Trump and his Gang.
In any case, I would say that in Modern History, Trump is perhaps already the worst President we have ever had, maybe barring Richard Nixon. I think that we could benefit from studying the Watergate Era to understand how to better oppose Trump and his Cronies. The media and the Counterculture of the time did much to erode support for Nixon, as well as action by the Legislative and Judicial Branches. It makes me hopeful that we can perhaps stop Trump and his Regime the way Nixon was ultimately stopped.

(16,829 posts)He was corrupt but he wasn't stupid, and his demeanor and temperament were not outrageous.
He created the EPA; he established diplomatic relations with China.

(538 posts)Nixon was not entirely bad. His personality was repellant, but he did achieve some positive things in regards to policy. I think our standard for villainy was perhaps lower then.

(40,221 posts)As corrupt as he was, he never forgot where he came from. He grew up in a poor family. He knew what poverty was. He believed in the social safety net. He actually believed in national health care, an idea repellent to his fellow republicans. In today's Republican Party, Nixon would be too liberal.

(1,132 posts)Nixon even expanded food stamps and enacted supplemental security income for those with disabilities and the elderly.
He was a poor president overall, but still several leagues above GWB and (especially) Trump. The latter is a plague on humanity.

(21,755 posts)Nixon had to deal with a Democratic Senate... Maybe House too. This kept him in check to a certain extent. Trump has all accomplices.

(206,072 posts)He opened up relations with China, rather than provoking them into threatening us - before he even took office. He actually cared about the environment and also developed a promising health care plan. Though it never had a chance to be implemented, it was a positive idea. Has Trump done even one positive thing yet? It just gets worse by the day - and it's only been days. And I don't remember him pissing off all of our allies, and he worried about things. A lot! And, of course, he loved his dog...

(11,304 posts)But give trump a little time and he might out do them. Certainly the worse president in the modern era.

(538 posts)I am sure that there are probably a number of contenders for "Worst President" from the 19th Century, but my history knowledge of the Presidents of that era is not as strong as my knowledge of 20th and 21st Century Presidents.
In any case, I would say that Trump and Nixon are certainly in contention of worst Presidents in the Modern Era. Prior to the 20th Century, I would defer to people who have studied that era more closely than I have.

(901 posts)because they won't stand up to violations of our Constitution and turn a blind eye to tRump's obvious, questionable ties to Putin. Oh, and it's only been a few days, so tRump is just getting started...
Nixon wasn't this incompetent.

(538 posts)Cheney/Bush can certainly be argued to be amongst the worst. I think in Nixon's case, there was a clear rupture of trust between the American People and the President. A lot of the Cheney/Bush crimes were below the radar. A lot wasn't, of course, notably the Iraq War. Anyway, good that you mentioned Bush.

(21,755 posts)Nixon, Bush, Reagan, Trump.
Why are they even allowed to have a candidate for President when they give us this shit?
And then idiot Americans actually vote for them.

(21,786 posts)Nixon didn't wilfully and seemingly deliberately sabotage relations with the USA's closest allies and largest trading partners, as Trump seems to be doing, for a start.

(50,562 posts)I think he's right now somewhere between Jean-Marie Le Pen and Silvio Berlusconi with just a touch of Nigel Farage stirred in for that special flavor of fascism.
At the end of four years, we'll be looking at Sani Abacha, the former President for Life of Nigeria and one of the political world's greatest crooks. Yes children, the hero of a million 419 scams actually existed...and the world may never know the full extent of his corruption. Abacha is famous for disappearing people, which Trump might not do. (You know your country's in deep shit when the nicest thing you can say about your president is, "well, maybe he won't order any extrajudicial killings." Abacha also liked to work at night and his children were major players in his administration. However, he died before Twitter was founded...
The other alternative is East German dictator Walter Ulbricht, who actually ordered the construction of the Berlin Wall. Ulbricht was so unpopular the Party ran him off after 11 years of mismanagement. (You'll love this: One of the biggest reasons Ulbricht was deposed was the entire world hated the Berlin Wall. So, who'd they replace him with? Erich Honecker...who designed the fucking thing and commanded the troops that put it up.)
Just for the hell of it we could compare him to famous organized crime figures like Al Capone.
I really don't want to lump him in with competent despots like Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, whoever's running North Korea this week, Mussolini or Hitler. Nor do I want to compare him to evil American presidents like Nixon or Reagan. Trump combines pure evil with mind-numbing stupidity, and that's kinda unique in this world - especially among the people we've chosen to lead us.
