I saw this start to happen during the primaries. CNN became a more reliable source than MSNBC.

A lot of attention in recent days has been paid to the Trump administrations decision to freeze out CNN. Rather than focusing on why Trump is lashing out at CNN, a better question to ask is: Why does the Trump administration feel so comfortable with NBC and MSNBC?
It was clear back in early January that NBC was building a Trump normalization machine when the network brought on former Fox News host Megyn Kelly, MSNBC brought on former Fox host Greta Van Susteren, and MSNBCs Joe Scarborough started talking daily about his chats with the president. Two weeks into Donald Trumps presidency, it turns out that things are even worse than imagined.
Kelly has yet to start at NBC (and reportedly wont for several months). Yet to make space for the former face of Fox News, NBC is removing Al Roker and Tamron Hall as co-hosts of the third hour of Today. Kelly, who, like Trump, built her name on racial demagoguery, is thus taking the space of two of the few people of color who host NBC news shows. Tamron Hall has since announced that she is leaving NBC. (Indeed, in recent years, Ann Curry, Alex Wagner, Karen Finney, Melissa Harris-Perry, and Michael Eric Dyson have all left NBC News shows, raising concerns that the network was marginalizing people of color). In short, maybe NBC should treat diversity as more than just a Twitter account.
As for Scarborough, Morning Joe of late is best understood as not just its own show but also a window into the heart of the Trump administration. Scarborough and co-host Mika Brzezinski are regularly meeting with and advising Trump. Scarborough defends some of Trumps worst instincts. And, of course, theres the obnoxious infighting with other advisers whom Scarborough blames when things go wrong. Trump himself watches the show. Even on the rare day when he criticizes Trump, Scarborough will say something apparently intended to protect his relationship with the president. If Trumps administration is Apocalypse Now, Morning Joe is Hearts of Darkness.

(139 posts)Matt LIAR asked all those softball questions of trumpy but wouldn't not let up on Hillary about the damn e-mails? They lost a viewer permanently then! Lauer is not a journalist but a star struck interviewer and a friend of trump!

(14,918 posts)"Donald Trumps rise as a presidential candidate has prompted many political observers to blame TV outlets for giving him historic amounts of free air time. While its true the media have overwhelmingly focused on Trump in their coverage during the current election cycle, there is another media phenomenon at play. NBC has spent more than a decade building his brand as a successful businessman of almost mythic proportion.
The networks coverage of Trump was overwhelmingly and consistently positive. MRC Business found only 15 stories (out of 335) on Trumps business failures, and 320 stories promoting him as a businessman, his businesses and his shows. The vast majority of stories were about the networks show The Apprentice, which featured Trump.
During the period of 2004-2015, NBC had two partnerships with The Donald -- his hit reality TV show and Miss Universe, which also included Miss USA and Miss Teen USA. NBC Newss Today served as a de facto PR machine for The Apprentice and its star. Today anchors interviewed fired contestants, presented Trump as the ultimate businessman, and even fired NBC interns on a mock Apprentice called The Intern. Today also made Trump into a career savior after his divine intervention, as host Matt Lauer put it, allowed a scandal-plagued Miss USA to retain her crown.
NBCs relationship with Trump was mutually beneficial, and fraught with ethical problems. Even when the network covered The Donalds business shortcomings, NBC failed to disclose its business partnerships with him. NBC also outright advertised (complete with prices) his and his daughter Ivankas businesses, and engaged in activities that jeopardized its credibility as an impartial news organization. For example, NBC donated more than $500,000 to Trumps foundation, and filmed episodes of Today from Trump venues.
Before the 2012 presidential election, NBC boosted Trump as a presidential candidate and depicted him as a political power broker. Access Hollywood anchor Billy Bush took Trump to the polls way back in 2004 and described him as, The next President of the United States Donald Trump. After a man asked Trump about running for president, Bush shouted, Write him in, and later asked a poll worker how many people were writing-in Trump on their ballots. Bush even told a man that while his vote was just one vote, Trumps vote was giant. MRC Business studied NBC coverage of Trump from 2004-2015, and found:

Failures to Disclose Business Relationships in Stories on Trumps Empire: In 13 out of 15 negative stories on Trump, the network failed to disclose that it partnered with Trump on Miss Universe and The Apprentice. Although NBC disclosed its partnership with Trump in several stories about the Miss Universe pageants, the network failed to disclose its relationships with him in nearly all stories critical of his businesses. The Society of Professional Journalists warns: Avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived, and tells journalists, Disclose unavoidable conflicts........(much more at link)
