I've avoided using Hitler comparisons over the years, but now it's apt. Very scary.

If that's true I feel sorry for him, his family and this country.

(25,862 posts)I'm not an expert on that disease by any means, although I have watched several people go through the decline of Alzheimer's. And their behavior was NOTHING like his.
He's a narcissist, pure and simple. He's used to being surrounded by people who cater to his every whim, and has almost never had anyone tell him "no" about anything. So he has no experience with the sort of give and take most of us experience in the real world. Add to that the fact that he has zero comprehension of how government work, what the system of checks and balances is all about, and throw in his assumption that a President is totally above the law and can doing anything he wants, and you have exactly what we've seen in the past two weeks.
Our only hope is that his damage doesn't go too far before he's removed from office.

(25,862 posts)of Alzheimer's is that if he really had it, he wouldn't be responsible for his actions or words. If he had it, I'd feel a certain amount of sympathy, but would know he needed to be removed from office before it got worse. But no, he knows exactly what he's doing, and much of what he does is based on is ignorance of so very much.
Don't know if you're old enough to recall Reagan's Presidency. I am, and it was obvious to the most casual observer that he was in the early states of Alzheimer's the last two years that he was in office. And at that, he behaved nothing like Trump.

Functioning in a democratic environment where there are checks and balances could be an ongoing challenge for an old dog like him who has never had to deal with such things. Lack of any experience in government was one of the big red flags that a lot of voters obviously ignored.

(90,771 posts)Trump also doesn't care how government is supposed to work.
Trump wants government to yield to his bidding without all the checks and balances.
He is reaching out to those who also don't understand how government works. To those who think taking a strong hand is a good thing, regardless of how many laws are broken in the process.
Now, these same people want to moan and groan if someone they don't like breaks a law. Or, more to the point, someone tells them a law was broken whether it was or not.
But Trump's idiotic strongman talk gives his supporters their daily boost of nationalism.
