In a previous thread, I explained how I was having a hard time disengaging from reading stuff about the election/this administration and it's affecting my mental health. I think it's partly fear of missing something huge and partly a desire to feel back in control whereby I constantly search the internet for some piece of information that will assure me everything will be okay and back to normal soon. If there isn't an obvious breaking news story like the one about Flynn lying to the FBI, I go looking for some source of hope...a tweet from Malcolm Nance, a video of a democratic congressman calling the election illegitimate, anything. Constantly getting my hopes up only to have them dashed the next day is driving me insane.
So my promise to myself is that, if there aren't any truly major developments within the next 2 weeks, I'm turning off politics for at least 2 weeks. It'll be hard. I've become so obsessed with politics lately that it's hard to even care about anything else when I try to do something else like watch a movie or read up on some scientific topic, whatever. But I'm gonna try to develop a healthier pasttime than watching this trainwreck every second of the day.

(365 posts)I am all but paralysed in my life right now. Doing the exact same thing as you describe. I find myself scouring the internet for some glimmer of hope. It is unbearable at times. I have never been very overtly political. Always voted straight Dem and stayed somewhat informed on issues and the like. But now I am obsessed...can't believe this is actually happening. I lived in Scotland during part of Dubya's time and thought it was quite embarassing. Now I am just horrified and petrified. Truly believe this man is a terrorist on a monumental scale as he is terrorizing at least half of the country. I do think the repugs are going to get a snoot full of crazy before too long but it is probably going to have to get pretty bad before they jump ship. Your media blackout is a healthy thing and I am going to think about doing the same. Thanks for sharing the idea.

(284 posts)I, too, was never that political. I cared about issues but not really about politicians, if that makes sense. I guess part of it was I was so excited about Hillary being the first female president that I was actually looking forward to following politics closely over the next four years. With these fucktards in power, however, this went from a benign hobby to a very, very unhealthy one.

(111,267 posts)There aren't any flowers to smell and few birds are singing in February, but there is still enough out there to take some pleasure not connected to that pig in the White House.
Keep the TV off except for movies, get some exercise, eat good food, and take care of yourself.
It's the only way to break out of this and gain renewed energy.
