Trumps Press Conference Had One Goal: Keep The Senate GOP In LineOf all Trumps challenges to D.C. rules, none is more unsettling and disorienting to the GOP power elite than this new idea that we should cozy up to Russia, looking the other way ― even cheering ― as Vladimir Putin mucks around in our elections.
Curmudgeon-in-chief John McCain, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, isnt the only Republican on the Hill suspicious of what Trump and his team were and are up to with Russia. So is Sen. Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Judiciary Committee, and Sen. Richard Burr, chairman of the Intelligence Committee, and Sen. Bob Corker, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, and perhaps a score of other GOP senators of various rank and stripe.
Any or all of these chairmen ― with the enthusiastic support of their Democratic committee members ― could stage lengthy and, from Trumps point of view, painful hearings.
Even Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, that exquisitely sensitive barometer of precisely what a hard-right message can and will sell, has expressed deep concern about Russian involvement.

(53,339 posts)I think it was CNN's Chris Cuomo who quipped that in the press conference "Our own Jim Acosta got more airtime than Alexander Acosta."

(18,837 posts)...I was viewing the live stream on the Web. Then the mudslinging began.
The House Republicans are embracing a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to Trump and Russia.
The Senate Republicans, on the other hand, want to ask. And in Trump's mind, any question represents asking too much.
We've been theorizing here about what might happen in 2018, how Trump might "go too far" and bring himself down.
It would be extremely satisfying to see the Senate break ranks with the House and be the instrument of bringing down Trump.
Of course, if he is able to sufficiently intimidate them, it will never happen.
But wouldn't it be inspiring if they grew a spine, kept it, said "screw this" and actually did their jobs

(24,412 posts)wasn't part of a brilliant new political strategy by Trump that actually works to cower Senate Republicans. If anything, they, like the rest of us, should be freaking out if even 1/10 of what I've heard about the presser was accurate.
