I heard about the Georgia race from a Dem town committee in Massachusetts. It's a chance to DO SOMETHING!! Let's get a running start and win this first competitive race!
Jon Ossoff is running for Congress in Georgia's 6th district, in the special election to replace Tom Price. Hillary lost in this district by only a single point in November and this could be a potential pickup for Democrats in the House. The election is on April 18th. You can contribute here:

(94,572 posts)This is an open special election...top two go to a runoff if nobody gets 50%.

(146,309 posts)I suspect this will be a close one. However, if we could really turn out the Democratic vote, it's a possibility worth pursuing.

(13,783 posts)This looks pretty good.
Jon is committed to progress and justice and he knows how to fight the good fight. We should unite behind Jon and send a clear message that Donald Trump doesnt represent our values.
Congressman John Lewis
He also has the support of the Democratic House leader. I'm feeling that now is the time to come together and present as united a front as possible. Time to shake up the left a little more when we have a foundation to stand on. (If, indeed, the other candidates are farther left. One can't tell any more just because someone uses the word "progressive."

(146,309 posts)Starting with Newt Gingrich it has been solid red for a long, long time. Is there any information to indicate why a Democrat might win now? Who's running on the Republican side?

(146,309 posts)If we could get a terrific turnout from the Democrats in the district, it could happen. I just hope there isn't too much dilution from having so many candidates. But, then, the GOOPers have even more, so that's something.

(13,783 posts)In a special election in CT for a state senate seat, Greg Cava lost by 11 points. When he ran in the regular election in 2016, he lost by 33. That means we only need to turn 6 more percentage points to flip a district that hasn't voted Democratic since 1891. (Not a typo).
We need to start laying the ground work for future wins EVERYWHERE. I recommend ItStarts.today, where all donations are divided equally among 468 Dem candidates. Who knows where a critical mass may begin to blossom?

(4 posts)Jon Ossof is getting a lot of press and support in and outside of his district. The 6th is a strong Republican district, but did not go for Trump by a large margin. I'm in the 4th District and have been seeing signs for him.
If the poll numbers hold up, he won't get 50%, but will be in a runoff with Karen Handel, a known name, but a lot of baggage.
Please send this guy whatever support you can!

Despite the district being a traditional long-standing Republican stronghold, Donald Trump only defeated Hillary Clinton by a margin of 1.5 percent in the 2016 presidential election. Comparatively, Barack Obama lost the district by margins of 23.3 percent and 18 percent in 2012 and 2008,

(13,783 posts)the response to our endorsement of Democrat Jon Ossoff is unprecedented. In just six weeks, Daily Kos readers have contributed an astonishing $1 million to Ossoff's campaign.
And now the GOP has taken notice: Check out this desperate email from the National Republican Congressional Committee that I've included below, begging their donors to help "preserve our majority at all costs" because "we risk getting President Trump impeached." (They're not even two months into the Trump administration and they're already worried about getting impeached. Hahaha!)
The GOP is scared as hell they're going to lose this special election in Georgia. Can you chip in $5 to Democrat Jon Ossoff now?
Here's a quick refresher on this race in case you need one:
This district was held by former GOP Rep. Tom Price, who resigned his seat in Congress after being appointed Trump's secretary of Health and Human Servicesaka the GOP point man on killing Obamacare
Jon Ossoff is an investigative filmmaker who worked for civil rights legendand Trump antagonistRep. John Lewis
This is a red district where Trump is deeply unpopular: Mitt Romney won here 61-37 in 2012, but Trump won by just a single point, 48-47a stunning 23-point collapse for the GOP
One Republican super PAC has already announced a massive $1 million attack ad campaign against Ossoff
The election is being cast as the first real referendum on Trump, and a Democratic victory here would send shockwaves through Congress, confirming the GOP's deepest fears that Trump is sinking their party and potentially upending the congressional GOP's efforts to repeal Obamacare
The election is scheduled for April 18that's just 39 days away!with a runoff set for June 20 if no candidate captures a majority in the first election
All eyes are on Georgia. Chip in $5 to Democrat Jon Ossoff now.
Keep fighting,
Michael Langenmayr, Daily Kos
