Less than a week ago, when the death of Little Caesars founder Mike Ilitch made news, his family shared stories of his vision, work ethic and love of the Detroit community. He was the son of immigrant parents. He opened his pizza franchises first location by the time he was 30. He owned two of the citys major sports teams, the Red Wings and the Tigers.
He also paid the rent of civil rights icon Rosa Parks for 11 years.
Its important that people know what Mr. Mike Ilitch did for Ms. Rosa Parks because its symbolic of what he has always done for the people of our city, federal appeals court Judge Damon Keith, a Detroit resident, told Sports Business Daily.
In 1994, a man broke into Rosa Parks residence in Detroit and assaulted and robbed Parks, who was 81 at the time. Following the attack, Keith put out an inquiry to find a safer home for Rosa Parks. Ilitch read about the plan in the newspaper and called to offer his support. Ilitch pledged to pay Parks rent indefinitely.
Mike Ilitch paid her rent until she died in 2005.

(6,592 posts)... but later there was a church that paid her rent. Not sure of her source.
Here's what I found:

Parks doctors say the 91-year-old civil rights pioneer has dementia and is in poor health. Hartford Memorial Baptist Church in Detroit had been paying Parks rent, which had been as high as $1,800 a month, since August 2003, the Rev. Charles Adams said.

But among one of the more feel-good stories to pop up about Ilitch is how he paid the rent for Rosa Parks the original embodiment of she was warned, she was given an explanation, nevertheless, she persisted when she moved into the Riverfront Towers in the mid-1990s.
Did the pizza magnate help with the living expenses for the civil rights icon? Yes. For how long? Well, not as long as some news outlets are claiming and, for that matter, not as much as a contribution as implied.

Its the WXYZ story thats really got everybody screwed up. With a headline blaring Mike Ilitch paid for Rosa Parks housing for more than a decade, the TV stations story is just not true. The headline repeats itself on national black media sites and elsewhere. Not true.
By all accounts, but particularly an Associated Press report from December 2004, Parks fell behind on her rent in 2002. That would be eight years after she moved to the apartment in 1994, and thats certainly less than a decade. Simply put, Ilitch and he was very good for helping out, dont get it wrong could not have been paying for Parks rent all that time. Otherwise, she wouldnt have owed.
...
Me? I don't know. I didn't find anything on Snopes about it. Just sharing info.
