http://www.kwch.com/content/news/Brewer-expected-to-announce-run-for-Kansas-governor-414164013.htmlHe stood in front of a few dozen people and said if you liked what he did in his eight years as Mayor then you'll like what he does if he becomes the state's top elected official.
"The same thing that we had here in the city of Wichita, I will apply those same things at the state level," said Brewer.
He specifically pointed to the revitalization of Wichita's Old Town, how he listened and worked with others, and how he navigated the recession without compromising public safety, infrastructure or raising property taxes.
"Our goal is to go around the entire state visiting with neighborhoods, communities and talking to leaders in those communities and finding out what the real concerns are and what are the needs of those individuals," said Brewer.
Part of his message focuses on giving Kansas schools more money.

(82,849 posts)All right, folks, Kansas has been a petri dish for Republican social experiments, and a credible, experienced candidate has come out of the Democratic ranks to run for governor. See if we can't toss him a few shekels to help his campaign.

(36,926 posts)But at least, after 8 hellish years of Brownback, we might have a sane governor.

(31,261 posts)Became a lot less rightwing. Lots of people that Brownback backed were defeated and moderate republicans and new Democrats were elected to office.

(36,926 posts)What Brownback did to KS schools has been a real eye opener.

(5,754 posts)so this is a great time to have new candidates. Good luck to Kansas. You're at the bottom now, so the only direction to go is up.

both super-majorities (if super-majority status is 2/3, I haven't checked on that)
Looks like a Democratic governor won't be able to veto the legislature's garbage without Repub help. But it would be a big step in the right direction. If 2/3 is the super-majority dividing line for overriding vetoes, then only a shift of one Repub vote in the House is all that is needed to make an override fail.
Note: it was this before the Nov. 8 election:
KS Legislature: House: 97 R - 28 D (77.6% R). Senate: 32 R - 8 D (80.0% R)
So there has been a huge shift in the House: Dems picked up 12 seats, Repubs lost 12 seats
And in the Senate Dems picked up 1 seat, Repubs lost 1 seat

Thanks to NewJeffCT in #10 below for the corrections, which I have incorporated above
In my original version, I had relied on Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_Legislature ) -- since some part of it had been updated, I assumed that the House and Senate compositions were also updated. BAAAAAD assumption.

(56,829 posts)The House is 85-40 Republican now, so Democrats picked up 12 seats.

They also picked up 1 seat in the State Senate. Still not enough, but heading in the right direction:

One of the few state level successes Democrats have had in recent years.

(10,109 posts)How these clowns can invite him like what he's done to Kansas is something to be proud of is ridiculous, but the ruling class got their tax cuts and that is all they care about I guess.
