9:30AM. I'm in the convenience store, grabbing a pack of coffin nails.

A white customer is ranting at the black clerk about how unfair everyone is being to DJT: we need to give him a chance! if we don't like him, we don't have to re-elect him in 2020!

The clerk says DJT isn't a Republican or a Democrat and will do whatever he wants.

The customer replies that DJT is just trying to bring us all together.

I can't think of anything even halfway civil to spout, so I stay out of the conversation

10:00AM. I get an email from a student who is going to miss some classes, having left the country to deal with a family emergency. I find myself worrying if the student will be able to re-enter the US

1:00PM. After my class, I notice a student wearing a FUCK DONALD shirt

1:30PM. It's lunch-time. I grab a hoagie from a young middle-eastern woman wearing a hijab. I find her charming, and I'm very polite: a warm smile and grateful eyes reward me

Told the young middle eastern clerk, in hijab, I was on my way to Not My President Day in DC. She gave a warm smile and gave me the peace sign. Older women, Sara, behind me was also buying cigarettes and said she and her friends were going, too. They followed me and my daughter to the metro station and we participated all together. It was nice.

Not as many people as I would have wanted to be there but those who were there were awesome. Made some new friends and contacts for resistance. I took vacation today to be there.

I bought a piece of pizza from a nice Mexican woman who called me her hija and at the gas station I purchased a coffee and a lottery ticket from an Indian man who smiled and wished me good luck. My point? There is no point, except that singling out particular races just to make yourself appear like a warm fuzzy beacon of tolerance is a little distasteful in my opinion.

My takeaway from the other posts is twofold. One-we are encountering a lot more situations that are fraught with political implications out in the open than we did pre-election. Two-everyday we interact with a variety of people who add substance to our lives and that we appreciate....and worry about their safety.

I don't think many people see the irony and absolute condescension in making common courtesy into an act of supreme nobility just because the person who happens to be serving you is a POC or a woman in a hijab.

...what you're bemoaning is a consequence of what's befallen us in the presidency.

I think we'd all do well in relating these presumably normal interactions, if only as a counter to the increasing bigotry and ignorance which is being presented in narrative form from the highest office of our land.

If there was as much understanding, as you suggest, as to make these expressions condescending, we wouldn't be witnessing the rise in hatred, both verbal and physical, in so many segments of our society. They have, indeed, made many such encounters heroic and notable.

but under 200 posts. That tells me that you've been hanging around long enough, to know that your response to the OP, can be seen to be intolerant. You've got not only to read the words of a poster, but also try to understand what is being said, don't assume that your interpretation is the correct one.

" except that singling out particular races just to make yourself appear like a warm fuzzy beacon of tolerance..."

I've little doubt we often project our own agendas, perceptions and motives onto others. It can be difficult for the jaded and cynical to allow honesty and sincerity in the works of others, regardless of how fuzzy your little beacon is.

However, I'm certain you'll allege to have been compelled by the better angels of your nature.

It's amazing that we all have rethink our daily interactions, simply because of the assclown in the White House.

And, no, to that fragile little dip shit who harassed the clerk, Trump is not about "bringing us all together" and fuck "giving him a chance." It's because of assholes like that that we all can't have nice things.

FDT.

One of my postdocs who is of chinese descent told me he'd rather not get out of the country to go to a conference because he is afraid that China might be next and he could get stuck at the border... Mind you, he has been here for years (did his undergrad and grad studies in the US) and has a green card.
