https://mic.com/articles/169471/white-house-hints-at-coming-crackdown-on-recreational-marijuana#.VC9hNOQYsWhite House press secretary Sean Spicer suggested Thursday the federal government could crack down on recreational marijuana use across the country, even in states that have legalized the drug.
Spicer's comments during the daily White House press briefing came in response to a question from a local Arkansas reporter, who asked whether President Donald Trump was OK with Arkansas' medical marijuana law, rules for which were recently approved by the state's Medical Marijuana Commission.
Spicer said Trump approves of medical marijuana use which could help provide relief to the chronically ill as opposed to recreational use, which Spicer suggested was tied to the opioid crisis many states are currently facing.

(2,900 posts)I was very motivated to move a portion of our investments into the cannabis industry in late 2016.
My father is doing rather well with it after a six month run, however even he is cautiously reevaluating his position.
I knew that once Sessions was appointed, things were going to get absurd.
This certainly validates my concerns...

(3,473 posts)Overdoses Fell with Medical Marijuana Legalization
While opioid pain relievers offer critical benefits to certain patients, such as those with cancer-related pain, the rise of opioid prescriptions has had devastating public health consequences. The C.D.C. recently urged physicians to be very cautious in prescribing these drugs.
Meanwhile, access to medical marijuana has expanded rapidly 24 states and D.C. have legalized its broad medical use and chronic or severe pain is the most common condition reported among those using it. On it's face, this might seem to mirror the rise in prescription opioid use.
But using state-level death certificate data from 1999 to 2010, my colleagues and I found that the annual rate of opioid overdose deaths decreased substantially by 25 percent on average following the passage of medical marijuana laws, compared to states that still had bans. ....(cont.)

(80,708 posts)One of the reasons James Cole wrote his memo in the first place, contrary to the narrative pushed by Sessions, etc-- was not because 'Choom Gang' Obama was demanding legal pot, but rather out of the acknowledgement that, for one, the feds can't FORCE individual states to criminalize marijuana, and if the Feds push too hard, the states could actually "go nuclear" and remove all mention of cannabis from their respective laws altogether.
Please read:
http://www.thestranger.com/news/2016/12/21/24755256/one-way-to-protect-washington-states-legal-weed-market-from-trump-burn-it-to-the-ground
What would that mean? It would mean a free for all for weed in those states. No regulation, no enforcement, nothing. The Feds, at the Federal level, DO NOT HAVE the resources to enforce pot laws in the individual states. Sure, they could arrest some people, raid some dispensaries, shut down a grow or two.. but if Trump decides to put his brand- not exactly rating super high right now- all over pot prohibition, does anyone think the voters of Colorado, California, Oregon, Washington, etc wouldn't tell him to fuck off in such a blatant manner?
They could try to interfere with the regimens of legal weed in recreational states- I suspect they will- but their options are limited and not all that appealing from their perspective, I think.
Another point to consider is jury nullification. Where are they going to find Juries west of the rockies willing to send people to prison for pot, at this point? All those red hat wearing yahoos who got all excited when the Malheur people got acquitted--- well, there's your principle of standing up to federal tyranny at the jury level, right?
Um, this would be like that, but times a million. How much taxpayer money are they actually going to spend fighting this?

(28,979 posts)OLYMPIA The next fight between Washington state and the Trump administration may be over legal marijuana.
With newly sworn in U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions on record as a strong opponent of legalizing marijuana, Gov. Jay Inslee said Thursday the state will try to persuade the federal government that states should still be allowed to make that decision.
Washington will present information to the administration and Congress about its experience after voters passed an initiative to allow adults to grow, sell and use recreational marijuana, Inslee said. There has been no major increase in criminal activity or ill health effects reported, he said, and the sales are generating tax revenue for the state.
Of the five or six fights they want to pick today, or any day, this is not the one they want to have, Inslee said. They would be on the wrong side of history.
