(20,444 posts)White House officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the Russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by The New York Times and CNN on February 14.
The direct communications between the White House and the FBI were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the White House is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the FBI on pending investigations.

(33,915 posts)"The New York Times put out an article with no direct sources that said that the Trump campaign had constant contacts with Russian spies, basically, you know, some treasonous type of accusations. We have now all kinds of people looking into this. I can assure you and I have been approved to say this -- that the top levels of the intelligence community have assured me that that story is not only inaccurate, but it's grossly overstated and it was wrong. And there's nothing to it," Preibus said on "Fox News Sunday" last weekend.

(24 posts)I live in Florida, and am constantly fighting to keep those little bitty pain in the ass ants out of the house, then I come on here and see your little crawly thing running around. If I end up breaking my laptop screen one day, I'm blaming you!
Seriously though, I have had them crawl up on the screen and it looks almost identical!

(267,845 posts)Welcome to DU
Hint - wipe your counters and walls with a vinegar solution every week for three weeks and then once every three to six months or so - the real ants disappear..
MissB
(15,800 posts)Because that won't help.

(42,641 posts)And I wiped my eyeballs in case the ants were there. Now the screen looks funny and I am crying.
Thanks.

looks like the FBI is bigger than the parts that helped put that orange piece of shit into office
nycbos
(6,033 posts)Large bureaucratic organizations like the FBI are highly complex with multiple parts that often conflict with each other.
That is why in my opinion it would be better to be the number two person at an organization like that. You get authority without your ass being on the line.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)he IS one of the thugs. He must be wheeling and dealing, burning and maneuvering like crazy. However he can use his tremendous power to get him safe out of this. And, of course, we know betrayal is in his tool box.

(58,785 posts)Comey's a typical right-wing fraction of a complete person, lacking the pieces that would make him someone who can handle power honorably and well.
When is the last time any of us saw a strong conservative be that? Never? That's why the dark money people had to purge moderate conservatives capable of caring about democratic principles from office.
GliderGuider
(21,088 posts)I have since I read Louise Mensch's story that included an explanation of his Glomar response.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)to explain away his behaviors to people in general. You might read also the responses of legal professionals and others who hold positions of similar legal responsibilities. He is severely criticized for what most see as highly questionable and very worrisome behaviors for a person in his position.
He also has a history of questionable behaviors toward the Clintons going back to the right-wing Arkansas Project to take him out. Years of phony investigations based on nothing but a mountain of innuendo trying to tie the Clintons to wrongdoing with Whitewater started in Arkansas and were continued right through Bill's presidency--with the Republicans involving the FBI in the creation of these vast clouds of smoke and mirrors. Exactly like Hillary's emails years later.
Both times, in his position Comey had access to all information and HAD to know there was no criminal behavior to be found. That didn't keep him in the 1990s from participating enthusiastically (many witnesses to that) in politically motivated fake investigations involving the FBI in an attempt to destroy a Democratic president. This went on for years, of course, until they finally accidentally found out about Monica and Bill made the mistake of lying about THAT.
There's more to know about Comey than just his, at the very least, highly unethical use of power against Democratic candidates. And the number of people who have been watching him in some concern has exploded now that he's taken his mask off on TV.
GliderGuider
(21,088 posts)Because Sessions is definitely not. Given that Congress is unlikely to act decisively, then without Comey and the FBI there is very little standing in the way of the dismantling of America.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)Besides all the stuff that is not generally known, let's not forget that Comey did not properly inform the DNC that 2 Russian intelligence services were running free in their computer system all spring and summer while he watched them. He had excellent reason to believe none of the party's higher-ups were aware it was happening.

(45,806 posts)better. Ticking off the entire intelligence community is not a good group to have against you. Guess the Con doesn't understand he's ONE GUY, against thousands. Bad odds IMO.

Having said that, roll the clock back 40 years and an independent counsel would already be in place based upon all that is already in the news - it would have blown up during the election.
So I'm still not convinced something is certain to happen properly. This is only significant if it goes anywhere.

(1,129 posts)Priebus went to McCabe first
Then McCabe again & Comey
McCabe has some history with the NY FBI office - organized crime division (?) so Rudy G probably thought McCabe would acquiesce if approached...
So... hopefully Priebus disclosed to either McCabe or Comey that 45 or Bannon told him to make the request ... that way 45 has no plausible deniability
