They listened to and believed in a message and then completely ignored the history, motives and character of the messenger.
This is what cult followers do. The german people of the thirties did this. Hitlers history was not a secret. The people of the south leading up to the civil war made this mistake.
It's ok to follow a message that looks and sounds good from some one of high character, a person with a good history , good motives. It's fatal if you follow that message and it comes from someone who has a bad history, bad motives and character.

(10,130 posts)Some would argue they gave a businessman with significant character flaws who had not been in government a chance when the alternative looked like a political candidate with their own set of significant character flaws who represented more of the same from Washington in years gone by.
Now, I think they made a very bad decision. And I certainly don't agree with them. I hate Trump and can't stand the GOP. But I think it's naive to suggest that a majority of Americans just overlooked the past of one of the candidates with cult like logic. To a lot of Americans, neither candidate was that great. And I point that out for the good of the Democratic party. We need to wake up and realize we do not live in a vacuum and the other side is not always 100% ignorant (even when at times, it might seem they are). Some Dems were similarly blind to the perceived flaws in their own candidate.
For the sake of 2020, I hope we learn from this or we could be doomed to repeat history.

(4,379 posts)You can not compare trumps flaws or character to clintons. Yes clinton was not a good candidate but she did not spend her entire life lying , conning people her entire life. Clinton helped a lot people her entire life. Trump ripped people off his entire life.

(5,611 posts)of the most heartbreaking things I have ever heard. I will post a link to it (it is on YouTube). She broke from the masses and bravely argued against Jones at the last minute that murdering the children was not right (you can hear screams of the dying towards the end and children screaming -- so much for Jones's promise of a painless, immediate death). Jones also had men with guns there to prevent any "deserters" -- though some did escape).

In fact, that was part of the strength of Trump's appeal.

Yes, there are a few who break free from the programming, but it generally requires either a personal trauma or else a catastrophic awakening following an encounter with someone who's suffered such a trauma.
As Trump himself correctly noted, he could shoot someone in the street and they would still vote for him.
