in accordance with their skills and long years of education and training...but yes, it's not only completely unethical and just plain backwards and wrong, but it does indeed end up costing more for everyone when we have a for-profit medical system. A hospital's mission should be to save lives and promote health, not to turn a profit and make their shareholders rich(er).

Same with education, in my opinion, but with healthcare it seems so obvious.

What if, say, firefighting was a for-profit industry? Didn't pay up your firefighting insurance, and can't afford our overpriced fire-suppression services? Well, too bad, we'll just let your house burn to the ground...not to mention the potential for people starting fires just so someone could make money off of them.

At the very least, we should be establishing local government clinics to handle routine small-stuff like high blood pressure, diabetes, colds, ear infections, broken bones, skin problems, arthritus, and the like. We all will be better off keeping that stuff out of the hospitals. Publicly buy the machinery, staff it with simple diagnostics, and put all workers on simple salaries. Include mal-practice insurance in the cost and everyone has medical care that's available, affordable, budget-friendly, and dependable.

Save the hospitals for the surgical/cancer/birthing types of procedures.
