There are a few appropriate responses to the news, broken by US Weekly on Wednesday, that Donald and Melania Trump allegedly sleep in separate bedrooms. One is anger: How dare this magazine make me think about the president of the United States in the snoring, bedheaded, pajamaed state of slumber or in any proximity to conjugal activity?
Another is boredom. Of course the Trumps dont share a bednothing about their body language or verbal references to one another has ever telegraphed anything approaching affection. Readers of this news may also experience strokes of schadenfreude (wheeee, more evidence that the groper-in-chief doesnt ever have sex!) and discomfort (arent we supposed to think politicians consensual sex lives dont matter?).
Yes, in general, adults should have the right to sleep and sex in whatever arrangements best suit their needs. No one should use a politicians consensual sexual activity, or lack thereof, to besmirch his or her character or fitness for office. It was gross, for instance, when a Trump surrogate argued during the campaign that people shouldnt vote for Hillary Clinton because he didnt think she and Bill have sex.
But thats why this particular bit of news, for this particular president, does matter. Trump used a big-powerful-rich-daddy persona to win the presidency, and he painted that persona with the help of the ever-younger string of women hes married and claimed to sleep with. All three of his marriages generated press leaks that suggested Trump was great at sex and had a lot of it with his respective wives, sometimes multiple times a day. The implication to anyone with eyes is that a past-his-prime man uses money and power to get sex and arm candy service from traditionally beautiful women. The US Weekly report turns that implication on its head.

This kind of prurient interest in someone's sex life is just stupid.

(259 posts)But, we also see each other every day.
How many times has he seen his wife and young child in the two months he's been President? That's the question that needs to be asked.

(9,999 posts)I wouldn't care if she actually lived at the WH. But the fact that she costs taxpayers on a daily basis is the reason they have people (unwantedly) involved in their bedroom.
For those who don't live in or around NYC, you might not understand just how much VISIBLE security is involved in and around Trump branded buildings. Walk past it regularly and it's annoying.

(15,801 posts)My parents often slept apart due to my dad's chainsaw snoring. There were times the neighbors complained thinking he was playing with weird power tools in the middle of the night. But they were together for sixty years.
However, separate rooms is one thing; separate residences is another thing altogether, and that does merit both comment and concern from those of us who pay for that extra accommodation.

(54,370 posts)I care that he thinks he can use nukes to satisfy his ego, or take health coverage away from 24 millions American citizens just to get himself seated as the guest of honor at a conference of big insurance companies.
What he does or doesn't do with his wife/wives in their bedroom(s) is of no consequence to me. I doubt any of the 24 million people facing their health coverage being eliminated care a whole hell of a lot, either.

I love how US Weekly is being used as a source here lately (this is not the first OP citing the rag). It's sad.

Last I knew Melania and Barron were still going to be moving into the WH after he's done with school. If this actually happens at least that will be a bit less money we're putting out for this family.
