(11,996 posts)Following Schumers announcement, all three senators have said they are prepared to take whatever steps necessary to confirm Gorsuch, even if it requires the nuclear option, but have also expressed a preference for preserving the rules as they are.

(5,954 posts)1. I don't think Mitch McConnell really wants to go down in history as the one who destroyed minority party protections in the Senate. (Especially because they could very well BE the minority in two years!)
2. I ESPECIALLY don't think McConnell wants to go down in history as the one who destroyed the Senate rules in order to make an appointment for A RUSSIAN ASSET that was put in the White House by Putin. (McConnell is corrupt enough to destroy the Senate to please AMERICAN plutocrats, but not RUSSIAN plutocrats.)
3. Even if McConnell could be bribed/threatened/bullied into doing that, I don't think you could round up a whole 51 GOP Senators who want to go down in history as accomplices to this. There are at least two or three left who aren't that corrupt.

(42,684 posts)They want their replacement for Scalia. And they'll do what it takes to get him. They already stood firm against even having a hearing for Garland, so why wouldn't they push through Gorsuch even if it means going nuclear. What option do they have?

(67,782 posts)...we have a much better chance of displacing a few dozen Representatives in the House.
Next year there are 34 Senate seats up for grabs, 25 are Democratic (including the Vermont and Maine independents) and only 9 republican seats. To get the majority next year would mean we'd have to hold all 25 of ours and take three of their 9. It's not likely that we'd win 28 of 34 elections.
Better to work on the House and hope we have a better chance in 2020 when they have more seats at risk AND the embarrassing presidency up for re-election.

(27,792 posts)"Republicans don't have the votes for the nuclear option"???
I wish that were true; but I doubt that it is.
According to the OP:
" Susan) Collins is the only Republican senator to express misgivings about the nuclear option so far."
But a Collins representative told the Daily Caller News Foundation:
"She hopes that common sense will prevail and that we will have a normal process for considering Judge Gorsuch's nomination."
That doesn't sound like Collins is ready to vote NO on using the nuclear option, and she
"is the only Republican senator to express misgivings about the nuclear option so far."
Also, even The Daily Caller, (which is a conservative site) doesn't say:
"Republicans don't have the votes for the nuclear option"
It's headline reads: "It Could Be Close: Counting To 51 On The Nuclear Option"

(9,895 posts)The legitimacy of the court is endangered if the GOP decides that "winning" is more important than the fate of the nation.
To heal the divides in this nation, to bring back any chance at "bipartisan" support for ANYTHING at all for the next 3 years, this is the solution to the SCOTUS problem. The right thing to do is to have a gang of Republican Senators descend on McConnell and set him straight on the role of "advise and consent" and who exactly fills Supreme Court vacancies.
I will forever be mystified by the results of the 2016 election (in my heart I truly believe there was some dirty dealings and vote manipulation to go along with the insane FBI director and inordinate amount of interest in e-mails and Benghazi), but the greatest tragedy was the usurpation of the SCOTUS by the recalcitrant GOP and their evil minions...
Truly depressing that the easy, fair and just solution is the exact LAST THING that will ever happen...

(42,684 posts)If it's the difference between Gorsuch being confirmed or not being confirmed, the Senate Repubs will fall in line. What other option do they have? Wait for Trump to nominate someone who would be all that different than Gorsuch?

(68,539 posts)I thought making them go nuclear was merely a delaying tactic...if we could block this guy, I would be ecstatic. It is hard for me to believe that the GOP won't in the end won't support the nuclear option...but wow just wow if they didn't support it.
