(30,404 posts)I have a friend that would tell me that she was going with her Church group to visit the " Reagan Library" etc. etc. etc.
When I talked to her a week ago she had changed her tune ~ now she says, "Romney is crazy ~ I wouldn't vote for him for a million bucks!"

(47,675 posts)We help each other out. Soon after he moved in, I brought over high-intensity lights while he was trying to pull down a tree after dark (didn't ask why he chose the time). He recently used his SUV to assist my dad's F-250 to restore our cherry tree to an upright position. It bloomed and produced fruit this season and I'm shocked that it lived at all. We joke about politics and threatened each other with a paintball fight (blue and red of course) with a cardboard effigy of Ralph Nader in the middle of the street - bonus points for hitting Nader. You don't have to agree to be friends.

(343 posts)we NEVER discuss politics or religion. I must say though, that none of my friends are republicans, except for my husband, a registered republican, who is really a "closet democrat".

(343 posts)my husband can't relate to what they represent. Also, the republicans I know are either wealthy or practicing Catholics....protecting their wealth and/or the doctrines of the church. Each to their own but that's why we NEVER discuss religion or politics. My "good neighbor" policy.

(57,936 posts)and maybe make that two (husband and wife? haven't talked to the wife) and one woman (and probably her mother if not yet declared mentally incompetent) because she is a "Christian" and votes her "morals."
As for the Christian, I just found out yesterday about her party affiliation, and since it was at a public event, I told her gently that we would have to talk.
And we will. She is very sweet. I think she has raised a couple of foster children. But I am curious as to how she defines "morals."

(4,465 posts)I live in Georgia, I am literally surrounded by them. And my two brothers and their families are hard core right wing Jesus/ Sara Palin/ Glen Beck loving flag waving Don't tread on me Bush supporting sorts.
I don't see Romney Bumper Stickers, what I see are Bush Cheney 00/04 ones and 'Abortion Kills' ones and fish symbols on every car. And I live in a relatively blue area!
Go a little further north up 400 and you'll see the confederate flag proudly being waived.
yeah. surrounded.

(30,404 posts)I would probably be arrested if I lived near you ~ Ms.goclarkObama would stay upset. : ) : (

(6,228 posts)A friend of my wife (and her family) were in town for 2 weeks and stayed at our house. They are mormon and were driving one of their parent's car, which had a Romney sticker on it.

(5,364 posts)As for my neighbors, I have no idea because we never talk politics, although my next door neighbor did have a McCain/Palin sign on his yard.
At work, a lot. From the "buzz" I hear, most are low information types who dislike Dems and liberals for the wrong reason, or due to social issues. There are a few hard line conservatives that are so on every issue, right down the line. I think it's tribalism.
I have one VERY staunch GOP friend that ties to sound knowledgeable and spits out the usual talking points, but he can't hang in a debate because he doesn't have any depth of knowledge of those points and basically votes repub because he is a repub. He equates black people ( other than some conservative firebrands ) with an image of shiftless thugs.
My 2 closest friends are turning rightward. They used to vote Democratic often due to repub's stances on trade/labor. Now that they are retired or nearly so, they let social issues drive their views and are turning ever rightward and are low-information opinionated idiots that do not like President Obama at all. It strains our relations, believe me.

(30,404 posts)for helping me ~ Living in liberal LA, this is hard to understand.
It is hard for me to believe that anyone would vote for Rmoney other than Rush and his Buddies.
Keep your input coming ~ thanks!

(82,383 posts)but today in my parking lot at work I saw a McCain/Palin sticker.
I know about twenty Republicans.
Not a big deal.
Good friends don't need to discuss politics.

Rmoney bumperstickers, on the other hand, none. I have seen at least a dozen for Obama.

(28,394 posts)I live in a red area of PA, so I can assume that I am surrounded by them. I knew a woman at work who had a poster of bush on her door even though her son was stationed in Iraq. She was extremely patriotic and always reminded everyone that she is a Christian, as if we had short memories.
I really don't have anything to do with people around here. I think they are all a bunch of yahoos.

(29,414 posts)I will not call him a "Rethug" because I love him.
I haven't bothered to count the number at work, mostly because I don't talk politics on the job and won't engage those that insist on doing so.

(53,061 posts)the technical term for them is
relatives.
None of them will bring up politics in my presence, they know they don't have the facts that we do, but
most of them have made some kind of noise saying that they really despise Romney.

(4,056 posts)I just provoked one of my old school mates who I connected with on FB after many years. Stupid, I know...but she was whining about what's a traitor Judge Roberts was, and I politely reminded her how much Rethugs loved him for Citizens United, and how they hated "activist courts" until the activism didn't go the way they wanted. Stupid, I know. Just got fed up.
However, to be fair I know far more liberals. Even at work, I was checking in passengers last Thursday who were cheering and celebrating the decision. One 4 yr old boy danced around with me as I told him he could get health care for another 22 years. Mom and Dad egged him on. The elder couple next to them high-fived him saying they were happy too because their Medicare drug costs were going down.
Awesome day at work!

(7,365 posts)Family-Mother, Step Dad (father is deceased, was a Teddy Roosevelt Republican), uncles, aunts, cousins...NOT ONE of my extended family is Dem far as I know
Inlaws-ALL Republican, though mother-in-law is very reasonable.
Work-Got a mix there. Don't talk much politics.
Church-Don't attend
Neighbors-Mormons across the street, radical tee-baggers in my cul-de-sac, family on one side Rep I guess, the family on other side is very quiet, mother has background in science and they don't run their mouth any so I figure they may be Dems. No one else outwardly Dem that I know of.
So I am completely surrounded by Republicans. My friends on Facebook, nearly all of them are also Republican except for friends I made in talking on mutual friends threads. They have become some of my favorite people due to our like-mindedness.
I am not worried I am surrounded by such conservatism, but do enjoy a good rap with Democrats on occassion

(31,011 posts)We can get in lively debates, but we do not allow these differences to break us apart as a family. In the big picture of life, family is family no matter what. That's how we are.

Doesn't seem like there will be any hope of changing the vote decisions made by friends, neighbors ~ so what do we do as Democrats?

(6,530 posts)Well, maybe a married couple at work. I sort of ignore them.
Otherwise, no one. I live near Seattle, no Romney bumper stickers here. My family lives in MA and NH, so they know Romney... no Romney supporters there, either.

(10,893 posts)my supervisor Felix claimed he voted Republican in '08. Besides him, I have never met any other Republicans (at least not knowingly). But then again, I live in Oakland, which is the 2nd most liberal city in CA behind only Berkeley. So far I have seen a ton of Obama signs here, and only one Ron Paul sign and one Meg Whitman sign a month ago. No Romney signs or anybody else. I didn't even see any McCain signs in '08.
