Egypt court sentences 183 Muslim Brotherhood supporters to death

(Reuters) - An Egyptian court sentenced 183 supporters of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death on Monday on charges of killing police officers, part of a sustained crackdown by authorities on Islamists.

The men were convicted of playing a role in the killings of 16 policemen in the town of Kardasa in August, 2013 during the upheaval that followed the army's ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Mursi. Thirty-four were sentenced in absentia.

Egypt has mounted one of the biggest crackdowns in its modern history on the Brotherhood since the political demise of Mursi, the country's first democratically-elected president.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters have been arrested and put on mass trials in a campaign which human rights groups say shows the government is systematically repressing opponents.

Egypt is a country where belonging to an opposition political party gets you arrested, tortured and sentenced to death.

Mass arrests, show trials condemning hundreds to death - a while back I'm sure I read about something like 300 sentenced to death for same .... beheading, it's all good if you're our good bud. It's OK to burn people alive, too, if you are in our graces - like the Ukrainians did a while back .... now, if you're some African militia, it's bad, but if you're on our side we'll just glide over that part.

It's only bad if you're our enemy. Even if you were our friend yesterday.

it always has to slip to extremes.... of either, Fascist Dictatorships, or Religious Fundamentalism, never a sane middle ground.

They have gone through three different forms of dictatorships since 2011. Mubarak a civilian dictator. Morsi a religious dictator. And now el-Sisi a military dictator. As the old saying goes meet the new boss same as the old boss.

He was an engineer, not a theologian.

His party didn't seize power, but won it democratically at the polls.

The Brotherhood never controlled the repressive apparatus of the state.

Egypt's "liberals" made a historic mistake when they begged the military to overthrow him. They sacrificed an opportunity to build an enduring democracy for short-term (and short-sighted) political gain. Now, they share space in the dictator's prison cells.
