RadioShack in Talks to Sell Half Its Stores to Sprint, Shutter the Rest
Source: Bloomberg
RadioShack Corp. is preparing to shut down the almost-century-old retail chain in a bankruptcy deal that would sell about half its store leases to Sprint Corp. and close the rest, according to people with knowledge of the discussions.
The locations sold to Sprint would operate under the wireless carriers name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist as a stand-alone retailer, said the people, who declined to be identified because the talks arent public.
The negotiations could still break down without a deal being reached, or the terms could change. Sprint and RadioShack also have discussed co-branding the stores, two of the people said. Its also possible that another bidder could emerge that would buy RadioShack and keep it operating, the people said.
The discussions represent the endgame for a chain that traces its roots to 1921, when it began as a mail-order retailer for amateur ham-radio operators and maritime communications officers. It expanded into a wider range of electronics over the decades, and by the 1980s was seen as a destination for personal computers, gadgets and components that were hard to find elsewhere. In more recent years, though, competition from Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and an army of e-commerce sellers hurt customer traffic.

It's not my regular RS. I've been stocking up on spare cells and lamps, sold off at 50% off, sometimes from an already reduced price.
ETA, 4:42 p.m.: I just called to see if they were still open. There's no answer. It's not because they're so busy that no one can come to the phone.
A eulogy for RadioShack, the panicked and half-dead retail empire

(39,374 posts)I still need the occasional old-media thingy like RCA cables that only they seem to carry with any depth. FM antennas, too. Crazy how fast we're supposed to say goodbye to all these things that still work perfectly well. Radio Shack still supports them and when they go, it will be all online with nobody to answer my impossibly stupid questions.

I will not miss Radio Shack. It killed Radar Electric, a great place for low cost parts, now its turn has come. 2 day shipping is fast enough that I haven't set foot in a Radio Shack in years, and last time I did, they didn't have what I wanted anyway.
Brick and mortar RS is a solution in search of a problem that no longer exists.
An aside, as a former Tandy Employee, do not mourn these assholes. (RS upper management, not the workers, this does suck for them in a way) They treated workers as badly as Wal-Mart EVER did. Tandy stole so much money off my paychecks, fuck them. Fuck them forever. Radio Shack is a vampire that's been living off the margins of what it could bleed out of its workers for years.
Do not mourn them. They never gave a shit about you, or their workers, or anything. Never. Not once.

(39,374 posts)but the store I go to has some pretty helpful people in it. The front-line always pays the price. Hopefully, they'll land on their feet w/Sprint.

(33,982 posts)It does suck for the rank and file workers. Unfortunately, I've been through it with Tandy before. I worked at Incredible Universe, which was a mall-anchor mish-mash of Radio Shack Unlimited, Computer City, and 'Incredible Universe', which was really more Sears Lite without yard tools or auto mechanic tools.
It went under in 1997-98 and getting out of there... Best thing I ever did. I would not be where I am in my career today, if I hadn't had the motivation to find something new, because my old job ended when Incredible Universe imploded.
I wish their front-line workers every ounce of success I was able to root out of life. It's not easy, but I've seen again and again, it's worth it.

Hard to believe that once upon a time Radio Shack was a major player in the microcomputer market.

I still have it along with a Tandy TL1000 -
Had used Trash-80s in college to do BASIC programming so it was only natural. I think the TL1000 had DOS 3.3 burned into a chip.

(411 posts)I loved browsing the radio shack shelves, finding the parts I needed and checking out the latest shortwave radios. I have a bunch of their catalogs from the 70's-1990's. Their catalogs are archived online at radioshackcatalogs. They still had some parts and radios for sale now but nothing like their heyday. R.I.P. RS.

(129,087 posts)I am on the east coast but I would always hear west coasters talk about (and trash) Fry's as a parts store. There are no Fry's here as far as I'm aware and there are folks who still build their own machines. Hell, Radio Shack should sell motherboards, CPUs, Overclock stuff, cases, etc., and they could probably do better than trying to hawk cell phones (particularly for those who want instant parts instead of ordering online).
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)... but it's only nostalgia. They don't have much of a niche to exist in any longer. Batteries are so much cheaper online (sometimes by a factor of 10), and Fry's has a far bigger selection if I wanted to shop in person for capacitors and cables and the like (for which I don't need a neighbourhood store).
My first computer experience was on a Trash 80 model I. Fun times.
