Lawmaker asks if swallowed camera be used for female exam
By KIMBERLEE KRUESI, Associated Press | February 23, 2015 | Updated: February 23, 2015 6:51pm

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho lawmaker received a brief lesson on female anatomy after asking if a woman can swallow a small camera for doctors to conduct a remote gynecological exam.

The question Monday from Republican state Rep. Vito Barbieri came as the House State Affairs Committee heard nearly three hours of testimony on a bill that would ban doctors from prescribing abortion-inducing medication through telemedicine.

Dr. Julie Madsen was testifying in opposition to the bill when Barbieri asked the question. Madsen replied that would be impossible because swallowed pills do not end up in the vagina.

"Fascinating. That makes sense," Barbieri said, amid the crowd's laughter.

The committee approved the bill 13-4 on a party-line vote, where it now goes to the House floor for a full vote. Barbieri, who sits on the board of a crisis pregnancy center in northern Idaho, voted in favor of the legislation.

Tue Feb 24, 2015, 10:12 AM

may not be what it sounds like. Some anti-choice groups have started what they call "crisis pregnancy centers" as a way to prevent a woman from deciding on abortion. In some cases they provide small amounts of money for the woman to live on until she delivers and then they pressure her to give the baby up for adoption. In other instances that I've read about they stick the woman with a foster family who keep her until she delivers and they and the center badger her to give up the baby for adoption. Still others string pregnant women along, telling them they are several weeks less into a pregnancy than is the case so that if the woman decides that terminating the pregnancy is her best option she will be too far along in the pregnancy to terminate under state law. Many of these "crisis pregnancy centers" do not have the woman's best interests at heart, only that no abortion take place and that an adoptable infant result. When I read this story last night on Facebook, I wasn't surprised by this idiot's question at all once I read he was on the board of such a center.

32. The last shared paths for the reproductive and digestive tracts in human ancestors...
Tue Feb 24, 2015, 01:47 AM
Feb 2015

... was about 180 million years ago, with the most recent common ancestor of genus Homo and the monotremes:

The monotremes are the last of the mammals to join us, and we meet a concestor for the first time in the then-contiguous supercontinent of Pangea. The monotremes constitutes only a few genera: Platypus, Short-beaked Echidna and Long-beaked echidna. They are mammals and have typical mammalian features such as warm-bloodedness, hair and milk production. But they resemble reptiles and birds in their possession of the cloaca and their egg-laying mode of reproduction.

Cloaca:
In zoological anatomy, a cloaca /kloʊˈeɪkə/ is the posterior opening that serves as the only opening for the intestinal, reproductive, and urinary tracts of certain animal species.

What? You can't imagine a connection between the great species Homo Sapiens and the platypus and echidnas??? Well, consider the current human condition (aka "birth defect", aka "developmental difference&quot of Persistent cloaca:

A persistent cloaca is a complex anorectal and genitourinary malformation, in which the rectum, vagina, and urinary tract meet and fuse, creating a cloaca, a single common channel.

Diagnosis of a female with cloaca should be suspected in a female born with an imperforate anus and small looking genitalia. The diagnosis can be made clinically. Failure to identify a cloaca as being present in a newborn may be dangerous, as more than 90% have associated urological problems. The goal for treatment of a female born with cloaca is to achieve bowel control, urinary control, and sexual function, which includes menstruation, intercourse, and possibly pregnancy. Cloacas probably occur in 1 in 20,000 live births.

Ignorant politicians have zero comprehension of the range of human experience. Consider the female baby born with persistent cloaca, undergoing a series of surgeries in infancy to "repair" the consequences of a random genetic connection seeping through 180 million years of evolution. Consider the woman whose experiences result in a pregnancy where the resulting child cannot receive the love, care, and attention they need to pursue a fulfilling life.

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all are created equal, that they are endowed with certain inalienable rights, that among these rights are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

34. This is NOT that outrageous, can women with a bad left Fallopia tube and bad right ovary give birth?
Tue Feb 24, 2015, 02:46 AM
Feb 2015

And the Answer is YES. They do NOT know HOW but it can occur. I took a class on Autonomy for lawyers and that was one of the points made, that doctors DO NOT know quite how the body works. They have a good idea, but how can a woman with a bad left Fallopian tube and a bad RIGHT Ovary conceive a child is unknown to them, it occurs is known to doctors, thus it is POSSIBLE, how is the big question.

In theory the Sperm reaches the ovum in the Fallopian tube, but in my hypothetical, the tube that the ovary releases the ovum into is blocked thus the ovum can not, in theory, reach the uterus OR have the sperm reach the Ovum. The unblocked Fallopian tube ends in a ovary that can NOT produce a ovum. Sperm and Ovum can travel in that Fallopian tube, but how does the Ovum get into that tube given the ovary attached to that tube can NOT produce a ovum?

Please note we are talking of a normal birth, so the fertilized ovum attached to the walls of the Uterus and the resulting fetus goes full term and is born. Just pointing out we do NOT know exactly how everything works in the Human Body, we have a good idea but not the exact way.

40. My point was we do NOT fully understand HOW the body works
Tue Feb 24, 2015, 10:24 AM
Feb 2015

And that includes both the digestive track AND the reproductive tracts. In my hypothetical how does the Ovum get to the UNBLOCKED Fallopian tube? There is NO direct connection except to the uterus and then the flow is DOWN the Fallopian tube NOT up that tube AND in my hypothetical the Ovum is BLOCKED by the bad hypothetical tube, thus the Ovum can NOT get to the good tube OR to the sperm, but it does. How that happens we do NOT know. It MAY involve the digestive track as far as we know.

I was just pointing out our knowledge of the internal organs are NOT precise as they are portrayed. Given that millions of years ago it was ONE tract for both (and remain one tract for reptiles and birds) how independent of the digestive tract is the reproductive tract? WE DO NOT KNOW. We think they are separate and that is the present theory accepted by the medical community, but theory implies it may NOT be true (though probably is). Just pointing out this politician's question is not that out in left field that some people are trying to make it out to be. That the answer was so absolute implies how much the theory is accepted within the medical community, but that does not make it completely 100% true. If I was answering the question I would have been a little bit more wishy washy and include a statement that out understanding is that they are two separate tracts BUT they exist side by side and were one tract millions of years ago.

One of the problems with experts is there often know more about a subject then what people want to hear. Thus experts have to give an answer that they think the people need to hear but at the same time keep an open mind as to problems with a simple answer. This leads to some long answers to what seems to be easy questions. That the digestive tract and reproductive trace separated in Mammals millions of years ago does NOT mean they are 100% NOT connected. The same with the rest of the organs, the inner connections between these organs are little understood, through they functions are. How does a Ovum go from a good ovary with a bad fallopian tube to the uterus? The best bet would be the digestive tract for that is right next to the reproductive tract. If that is the case, can the reverse be done? I do not know but if it can be, then the Politician's question is not that much out of order.

I am just pointing out the Politician had a question and it was answered and the question was NOT that outrageous as some are trying to make it out to be. Thus my story about the reproductive tract and as such it is a way to show how little we do know of how the organs of the body interact.

Last edited Tue Feb 24, 2015, 10:34 PM - Edit history (1)

It was one of the many parts the Doctors holding the Class thought attorneys who were doing Social Security Work should know. This included no woman is ever one week pregnant, pregnancy is dated from a woman's last menstrual cycle, which is two weeks BEFORE she can become pregnant. Thus if a woman is impregnated today, she is two weeks pregnant.

There was a lot more on the human anatomy and what doctors have seen by laymen using the wrong medical term for medical problems. Thus the leg is always the lower leg, the upper leg is ALWAY referred to a a thigh it is NOT your leg. Same with the arm, the lower arm is different from your upper arm. When the term Arm is used by medical professional it is the lower arm NOT the upper arm. These are Jargon of the Medical community and the class was more an introduction into that jargon then anything else.

When doctors talk to each other they use this Jargon and they have seen to many people misuse those terms. The class was more what the doctors were saying when they say or write something as oppose to actual medical conditions. Pregnancy was a problem the doctors were seeing so it was addressed. Thus the problem with ovaries and fallopian tubes came up, so did how to count the weeks of pregnancy. The rest of the class was on what doctors are saying when they write things down, again more on Medical Jargon then anything else. One things the Doctors wanted to present was the misuse of jargon by non medical people and what they actually do know about the human body.

They also wanted to present what they do NOT know, which is why the fallopian tubes came up in the class. How a woman with a good left ovary, but a blocked left fallopian tube and a bad right ovary but a good right fallopian tube gets pregnant AND takes that fetus to term was unknown to them. so do NOT ask a doctor how it happens for the answer will be "I do not know, but it happens". This goes into other area of the body, the doctors can answer how something occurred but they may not be able to say WHY. That does not make the doctor's report bad, but is the result of what we do know and do NOT know about the human body.

One of the words the speakers mentioned that is misused all the time is the word "Acute" which only means new. i.e. he has an acute pain where I hit him. That does not mean severe or light just that it is NEW, but on the dramas on TV is sounds so medical and severe. Thus someone can have "an acute pinprick" i.e he did not have it five seconds ago, but he had it now. Chaotic was another term misused. "He has a Chaotic case of breathing" i.e. he has been breathing all of this life, thus long term. Given breathing is one of the things we do, Chaotic breathing is NOT bad, but it SOUNDS bad on dramas. Watching TV you see people misuse these terms all the time and I now laugh when I hear it.

"Doctor, this patient has an Acute case of Chocolate!!! What do we do??? Take that Hershey bar away from him." "Doctor, this patient has a chaotic case of being an idiot, he was dumb when he was in high school and he is dumb today. " Acute and Chaotic sounds so medical, but what they mean is very limited and people misuse the terms all the time.

Acute as used in Medicine:

Chaotic as used in Medicine:
