CBS News releases video referenced in O'Reilly dispute
Source: AP
NEW YORK (AP) CBS News on Monday released video from four stories it aired about the Falklands War in 1982, all part of a dispute involving Fox News Channel host Bill O'Reilly and his subsequent statements about covering the war.
None of the stories mention O'Reilly, then a young CBS reporter, or makes any specific reference to a CBS crew member being hurt.
The television time travel was prompted by a Mother Jones article last week calling into question O'Reilly claims that he reported in a "war zone" or "combat zone" during the brief conflict between Britain and Argentina. Few reporters made it to the front of the war, some 1,000 miles from the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.
O'Reilly has said that he covered an anti-government demonstration in Buenos Aires that turned violent and that a photographer he was working with was knocked to the ground and was bleeding. Describing the events two years ago, O'Reilly said he "dragged off" the photographer from danger.

(11,238 posts)Depending on how much power they have; what their worth is to those who can defend and protect them & how much power THOSE people have; and all of them bank on the eventual forgetfulness of the public. If there's too much fuss, there's always the ostentatious display of contrition; then if necessary, the period of lying low; then the comeback. They've gamed it all out.

(7,769 posts)So his statement that he was in a War Zone or Combat Zone is a bald faced lie.
That MF-er knows his average viewer is geographically challenged and doesn't know the capital of Argentina is over 1,000 miles away from the Falkland Islands, an actual combat zone.

That is NOT what this is about and you f%$king know it!
Bill O-Reilly said he was in a "combat zone" in the "Falklands".
The AP does this kind of subtle, subversion ALL THE TIME.

(3,811 posts)I see that now after reading closer.
I'm still bothered by a lot of the AP's news coverage. I often see them frame issues in ways that reinforce right-wing opinions. I think they rarely frame issues in ways that are favorable to liberal or progressive opinions.

(23,946 posts)On the good news front:
"Revenue declined 6% at the news and information-services unit that accounts for about two-thirds of News Corp's overall revenue. The unit, which comprises the company's newspaper holdings in Britain, Australia and the U.S., including The Wall Street Journal, reported a 15% drop in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization."

(3,811 posts)What they leave out is part of it. They often frame stories to support a right-wing perspective. I almost never see them frame stories to support a left perspective.
I kind-of jumped the gun on this one, though. But the point remains. Thanks.

(5,902 posts)O'Lielly has often described his experience in Buenos Aires in the same breath as El Salvador, leading his (mostly provincial and bigoted) audience to believe they were in any way similar. This footage instead looks like a protest of the kind you could have seen in any number of European capitals at the time.
The only "war zone", one hopes, is the one that will erupt in New York courtrooms when Billo is sued by his former CBS colleagues and -I pray- fired.

(5,902 posts)It's also worth mentioning that, until then, the news media was mostly supportive of the Junta (the "Proceso", as they were known in Argentina). Life Magazine was the worst.
That all changed with the Falklands invasion, of course - but fortunately so for Argentina's people, since the defeat forced the hard-line, far-right Galtieri to resign. His successor, Reynaldo Bignone, eased monetary and wage policy, restored labor rights, freed hundreds of political prisoners, and against the wishes of the rest of the Junta, called elections. All in all, the fiasco was a blessing in disguise.

(21,745 posts)and heard the gunshot that killed him. O'Reilly said that he was knocking on de Mohrenschildt's door for an ambush interview when he heard the shot, as though George was so afraid of facing O'Reilly that he had to end himself. I have no first hand knowledge of the truth here, but I have never seen the name of O'Reilly mentioned in connection to this from any other source than O'Reilly.
O'Reilly said he knew immediately what had happened, and so sadly turned away and left. Smells like BS to me, and I am a country boy.
