Congress tries 1-week bill to keep Homeland Security open

Source: AP-Excite

By DAVID ESPO and ERICA WERNER

WASHINGTON (AP) — On a day of high drama, the Republican-controlled Congress struggled into the night Friday to pass emergency legislation to keep the Homeland Security Department in full funding for one week and avert a partial shutdown threatened for midnight.

Acting without fanfare, the Senate cleared the measure less than four hours before the deadline that would have triggered a partial shutdown at the federal agency with anti-terrorism responsibilities.

That sent the bill to the House, where only a few hours earlier, 52 rebellious Republicans unexpectedly joined with Democrats to vote down a three-week funding bill. The vote was 224-203.

Conservatives were furious that the leadership had dropped provisions repealing Obama administration directives that shield immigrants from deportation. Democrats demanded longer-term funding as their price for passage.

Believe me, AP. Outside of your DC media bubble, this doesn't even register on the "drama" scale. The country at large changed the channel a long time ago.

But the story doesn't say where the votes came from. It's really just the earlier story about the 3-week bill failing with an additional paragraph stuck on at the beginning, so it doesn't explain much.

House passes one-week funding extension for Homeland Security

WASHINGTON Fri Feb 27, 2015 9:56pm EST

(Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives passed a one-week funding extension for the Department of Homeland Security late on Friday, in time to avert a partial shutdown for the agency at midnight.

The two-thirds majority vote, which came with support from Democrats a few hours after the House failed to pass a three-week extension, buys time for Congress to sort out a longer-term funding solution for the domestic security agency.

nuts. The "tea party" (the original ones ya know are rolling in their graves) were dressed up in colonial gear, like they know America's history. Anywho, CPAC wants DHS defunded, not because its an overreached program, nope, because they can blame Pres O when terrorist kills Americans on America's soil.

Yes, folks. CPAC audience and political members don't give a shit about my life nor my families, they only care abut destroying Pres O and any party that don't think and look like them.

1-week bill is total bullshit. As far as I am concerned Dems folded and gave into the rethugs. Should have been a normal, clean funding bill or nothing at all.

spaghetti-spine Dems screw us over again.

A weekly reminder of Republican foolishness can't hurt. And DHS will stay funded.

It's more likely, though, that after some number of short-term funding bills that don't address immigration, the Republicans will decide they've done enough to appease the crazies, and they'll give in.

If you hate undocumented immigrants, why would you vote against funding the department that keeps them out of the country? The 52 or whatever far right crazies need to take advantage of their Obamacare and see a shrink.
