An online video defending Russian imperialism, which states that its intended recipient is U.S. president Barack Obama has gone viral, attracting millions of views and has even been tweeted by Russias deputy prime minister.
The sophisticated propaganda video, entitled, I, Russian Occupier, uses impressive graphics skills and video game imagery of soldiers and tanks, and begins with the words: Im a Russian occupant. It is my profession. The video goes on to claim that historically places such as Siberia, Ukraine and the Baltic States have prospered thanks to Russian occupation, and have since declined and failed to modernise without Russias guidance.
After the Russian occupation of the Baltic States in 1940, the bellicose video claims that the countries were transformed from farmlands into factories and power plants making sophisticated electronic goods. Now they sell sprats and part of their people clean toilets in Europe, the video taunts.
The video then turns its attention to Ukraine, when it was part of the Soviet Union. I occupied Ukraine. Together with the Ukrainians I built aircraft engines, ships, tanks and cars. I was asked to leave. Now they are destroying all that is left of the occupant. Moreover, they dont build anything new, except for endless Maidans and dictatorships.

(4,259 posts)What a jackass.
geek tragedy
(68,868 posts)You can spot these jackasses pretty easily--in each and every discussion about Russia, they always take the side of the Putin regime, bashing critics of Putin, disputing negative reports about Russia, while not once criticizing Russia's government or policies.
Don't you hate those people too?

(68,868 posts)Russian government at DU.
I mean, like ever? Ever criticized Putin, or blamed him for doing something wrong?
Ever?

(68,868 posts)A lot of labels are accurate and appropriate.
A few, obnoxious folks who have a 100% record of supporting the Putin regime.

(4,259 posts)when have you had anything to say about the US doing something shady/illegal/TROLLING!/
US sympathizers bother me as much.
Meh.I
Never said I thought Putin was a good man. I just think we - the US - should stay the fuck out of any and every place in the world where we feel we might gain an advantage, often at the expense of ordinary people, like you and me.
But when invectives like Pootie Poots, bootlickers, etc etc pop p (kind of like you said "get ready for it!" it is SO tiresome.

(68,868 posts)Now, when will you start criticizing Putin for his role in destabilizing Ukraine, and also stop trying to pretend it wasn't Russian-aligned separatists who shot down MH17?
elias49
(4,259 posts)and it has been almost a year. WTF??
When will a definitive report be ready for public consumption?
If Putin was trying to destabilize Canada, I'd feel like I had more skin in the game.
What's happening in Ukraine sucks. But I'm not privy to the facts of the situation. I'm informed by the press.
I have no State dept connections.
No NSA connections
No CIA connections...

(6,419 posts)How could that possibly affect anybody else?
Non sequitur at best.
"...who cares about a spreading fascist nuclear regime waging war in Europe?" When did Ukraine acquire nukes?
(Haha. Just kidding!)
You don't think a year is long enough to massage the report on the downed flight?
Yikes. They got the black boxes, didn't they? Does everything have to be translated into Dutch first?

(6,419 posts)does not bode well, and neither does your flippancy at the horror of Putin's recklessness resulting in an airliner being shot down, or your apparent glee that a ransacked crash site in a war zone has given Putin a sickening cynical & implausible deniability.

(45,984 posts)Yes, that's an apology for imperialism. We can even hear that from American imperialists here. Think of all the wonderful things we did for Native Americans, Vietnamese and Iraqis. Where would our Latin American neighbors be without us?
There is no such thing as a good empire. Imperialism is as morally reprehensible as the slave trade. In the latter, the labor of an individual is taken by force because those taking it are "better" than the slave laborer. In the former, the natural resources of an entire nation is expropriated by force because the "civilization" of the occupying power is "better" than that of the colonized nation. It is simply racism used to justify grand theft. Anyone who watches that video and claims not to see that message is either kidding himself or a liar.
The target of this video is not Obama or the Americans who support him or even the Americans who oppose him. It is the Russian people themselves, who must be sold on the idea of empire after getting kicked in the teeth in Afghanistan the way neoconservatives had to sell Americans on the idea after we got kicked in the teeth in Vietnam, and are again trying to sell Americans on the idea after getting kicked in the teeth in Iraq.
This won't end well for Putin. The sooner the Russian people wake up and see this man for narcissistic tyrant that he is and turn him into a lamp post ornament, the better.

(45,984 posts)Everybody else fucked up choosing the leader.
The Boyars picked the Romanovs, and the Romanovs spent 300 years fucking up .
The Romanovs were succeeded by a provisional government that, in a moment of desperation, armed the Bolsheviks. The Bolsheviks fucked up when they allowed Stalin to succeed Lenin. In case you haven't noticed, Stalin was a a narcissistic dictator in a era of narcissistic dictators; he starved the Ukrainian peasants, constructed a police state and came close to handing the Nazis world domination on a silver platter. I'd say that Stalin was a fuck up.
The Bolsheviks collapsed and the best thing that emerged was a corrupt, drunken fuck up named Boris Yeltsin who was dominated by the professionally fucked up IMF. Almost as he breathed his last, he rsigned and handed the ball to Vladimir Putin. He thinks he can lend Greece money to restructure their debt; that would be great if he could, but somebody forgot to tell Putin that his currency is worthless.
Since everybody else has fucked up, I think it would be a good idea if the people chose a leader. I'm sure they can choose a leader do better than the ruling class ever did.

(6,419 posts)Russia stole from every place it controlled or occupied, from Latvia to Czechoslovakia. Putin has been busy stealing from the Russian people for 20 years now, and he's one of the richest men on the planet because of it.
And wow--now Putin's Russia is accusing other places of being a dictatorship?
