Over 2 dozen murder victims' loved ones call for end to death penalty in Nebraska

LINCOLN Twenty-five loved ones of murder victims have signed a letter calling for an end to the death penalty in Nebraska.
The letter will be submitted to the Judiciary Committee of the Nebraska Legislature, which is hearing a bill Wednesday afternoon to abolish capital punishment in the state. Legislative Bill 268, introduced by Omaha Sen. Ernie Chambers, would replace lethal injection with life in prison without parole.
Tricia Moore of Omaha, whose 23-year-old son Jerray Moore was murdered in 2013, said the state spends millions of dollars trying to execute the men sentenced to death row. Meanwhile, she said she still owes $1,700 for her sons funeral.
If the state is serious about assisting crime victims, we would spend our resources differently, Moore said Wednesday during a press conference at the State Capitol. We would ensure that every time a child is lost, that family is given some basic help to rebuild their lives.

(43,154 posts)It was just killing a person, albeit a deeply flawed one.

(43,154 posts)That assumes a person was born evil. Hell, I'm sure even Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot weren't born evil.
The deeds people do are evil. People are not incarnated from birth as evil.
I never got that primitive thinking, but it's an underlying rationale as why we haven't civilized and abolished the death penalty yet.
Killing the person won't kill the evil.

(725 posts)They do just fine. Most states with no DP have lower murder rates.
It costs more to kill someone, with all the appeals and delays, than it does to just sentence criminals to life without parole.

(725 posts)You brought up "justice".. can you say how much we benefit because we Americans are legalizing ourselves collectively as worldwide killers of other human beings?
"Justice": a totally vacant word without your defining it.
"Justice" in most nations and states in the USA does NOT involve our collective involvement in killing a human being.
So define it, please.
Then define "revenge".

Celebrate, dance, love...
at least that's one 64-yr old activist in a very small pond wants for us all.

(160,450 posts)who can work themselves up to a frenzy of hatred trying to imagine how he want to kill any and everyone who ever crosses them!
They have looked deeply enough inside, have stepped beyond their own personal desires, selfish interests, and they recognize the truth, even after having been through actually hell on earth.
I respect them, and hope their stand in favor of a better world will win.
Thank you, Omaha Steve.
