Ex-FBI agent charged with 64 counts in drug tampering case

Source: WBAY-TV, ABC affiliate in Green Bay, WI

WASHINGTON (AP) — A former FBI agent in the Washington, D.C., field office has been charged with 64 counts involving allegations that he tampered with substantial amounts of drug evidence, kept heroin seized during investigations in his car, and periodically took the drug.

The charges, including obstruction of justice and heroin possession, were filed Friday against 33-year-old Matthew Lowry in federal court in Washington.

Lowry’s attorney, Robert Bonsib, says in a statement that Lowry will plead guilty to all the charges and “recognizes the importance of taking full responsibility for each of his acts.”

The charges against Lowry caused federal prosecutors to dismiss charges against at least 28 defendants and notify 150 more that Lowry had participated in investigations targeting them.
