Growing Muslim, Christian Populations Are A Threat To India , Hindu Nationalists Claim
Source: international business times
Growing Muslim and Christian populations in India are a threat to Hindus and should be required to adhere to forced family planning, a far-right political party said Wednesday. Shiv Sena had previously supported an effort to require such religious minorities to undergo sterilization to limit their population growth.
"It is in the best interests of the country and the Muslim community... With family planning, they will be able to feed and educate the children and live better lives," Shiv Sena parliamentarian Sanjay Raut wrote in a newspaper editorial, according to local media reports. The editorial asked Muslim leaders to adopt family planning and save the nation, India Today reported. The editorial continued: "In the near future, the Muslim population of India will exceed the number of Muslims in Indonesia and Pakistan, which will result in the cultural and social imbalance of a Hindu nation."
The Muslim community in India soared 24 percent from 2001 to 2011, growing to roughly 14.2 percent of India's population, according to census date published in January. States with growing Muslim populations included Kerala, Goa, Haryana and Delhi, according to the Times of India. In all, India is expected to overtake Indonesia as the country with the largest Muslim population by 2050, according to a recent Pew Research Center study.

(24,692 posts)"Hindu nationalist" concerns (similar to those Americans who worry about the US straying from its status as an allegedly "Christian nation" due to secularism and multiculturalism) will feature prominently in the Indian political discussion these days.
The BJP is a right-wing party with close ideological and organisational links to the Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.
The party expresses a commitment to Hindutva, and its policy has historically reflected Hindu nationalist positions. The BJP advocates social conservatism and a foreign policy centred on nationalist principles.

The ascendancy of a "right-wing", "nationalist" and "social conservatism" political faction all have familiar rings in the US and Europe.
Perhaps someone could come in and mitigate the situation for them.... the British for example...

(17,505 posts)Religion.... destroyed that. The British (who were dreadful!) reacted (badly...as usual) to the rise of Muslim nationalism
Next time... get the point.
Religion, as usual, is the problem....then and now.

(11,014 posts)On the surface this looks bad, however, those who know the whole story will see it differently. India is not like the US with unlimited resources and population is key to whether the country prospers or starves.
1. Rising population is a threat to India in terms of its economy and resources. The government has push/pull strategies to require family planning with families of no more than two children. This is done with incentives as well as not subsidizing any children over two. Hindus have generally conformed to this in the interest of the nation and Hindu population growth has decreased substantially.
2. Some of the Muslim leaders have openly expressed the wishes of converting India into a Muslim country and then forcibly convert Hindus with ISIS like tactics which are actually traditional to 11th century Islam.
3. The path laid out by some Muslims is to have as many children as possible -- in some cases 10-12 per family to increase the proportion of Muslim population. In two mosques, I have seen projections that show Muslims will be >50% of the vote by 2035 and will then seize power to create an Islamic republic and dissolve the current democratic constitution. The strategies proposed to accomplish this are opposing all birth control and family planning on religious grounds. What needs to be acknowledged is that not ALL Muslims in India believe this and most of the Muslims in urban areas practice birth control and family planning. Unfortunately, the rural and uneducated Muslims who don't see the bigger picture fall prey to this and have more and more children to take them further deep into poverty.
The Muslims should be (being born in India) citizens of India first and then Muslim. If they are citizens of India, they should do what is in the best interests of the nation as much as Hindus. Since a majority of the large Muslim families live below poverty line, they are a burden to society which by and large is restricting its population growth.
Sadly, the lack of family planning affects the large Muslim families the most by dividing the meager resources into many children, sentencing them to generations of poverty.
Considering Islam's brutal history in India with rapes, abductions and forced conversions over 500 years of Islamic rule, this will not end well unless everyone joins the rest of the citizenry in controlling population growth.
The approach by Shiv Sena is completely wrong and education is the key here -- not forcing people. Sadly, the sensational and politically motivated idiocy like in the OP gets publicity.

(89,246 posts)It has nothing to do with the good of the nation.
Things like girls being educated and working, rise in living standards etc will usually result in fewer kids.
Hindus are also less likely to oppose birth control since there isn't anything in the religion on it. In the case of christians and i assume Muslims it's often a religious matter.

(4,229 posts)I think the danger is any religious group that seeks to legislate it's rules on the majority of the population, or kill or somehow marginalize others who are of another religion.
That said, the whole anti blasphemy killings and sectarian and religious killing going on in a lot of the middle east, coupled with some of the terrorist attacks India has suffered could give the hard line Hindu nationalists and the population fuel to fire xenophobia.
