Former Michigan U.S. Sen. Griffin dies at 91

Former Michigan U.S. Sen. Robert Paul Griffin a key Republican congressional leader in the 1970s and during the Watergate crisis died at his home in Traverse City, a former aide said. He was 91.
Griffin was elected to the U.S House of Representatives in 1956 at age 33 and was appointed in May 1966 to fill the Senate seat of Patrick V. McNamara. Griffin was elected twice as senator and served as Republican whip from 1969-1977.
A staunch Republican and one-time ally of President Richard Nixon, Griffin also had a role in Nixon's 1974 decision to resign, said George Weeks, a former wire service reporter, Detroit News political columnist and staff member of Michigan Gov. William Milliken. . .

Not a great admirer, but remember him as a Republican who was once against the Vietnam War. Much better than today's GOP.
